How to Make a Popsicle Stick Snowman
Materials:
- Popsicle sticks
- Acrylic paint (black and white)
- Large googly eyes (20mm)
- Craft foam sheets (orange)
- Thin Christmas ribbon
- Red metallic baker’s twine
- Silver snowflake confetti
Equipment:
Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Create the snowman shape
- Place 8 popsicle sticks beside each other, vertically. Use another popsicle stick to line them up neatly.
- Add hot glue to the ninth popsicle stick, leaving about 3/4 inch without glue on either end.
- Set the popsicle stick on top of the 8 popsicle sticks on an angle, connecting them and creating a hat brim.
Step 3: Paint the snowman
- Paint the hat section black. Be sure to get the top and sides of the sticks as well.
- Then paint the rest of the snowman white. Be extra careful as you get near the black paint, or let it dry first before painting this section. Allow the paint to dry.
Step 4: Add the details
- Use hot glue to attach googly eyes to the snowman.
- Cut a carrot shape from orange craft foam for the snowman’s nose.
- Attach it below the eyes.
- Cut a 7 inch piece of 1/8 inch wide ribbon.
- Add a thin line of glue above the hat brim.
- Attach the ribbon into the glue as a hat band.
- Glue the ribbon ends to the back of the snowman.
- Cut an 8 inch piece of colourful baker’s twine and tie it into an ornament hanger.Attach it to the top back of the snowman with a generous amount of glue. Don’t flip the snowman over until this glue is dry.
- Attach a confetti snowflake to the snowman’s hat for a fun accent.
- Then use a fine tip brush to draw dots of black acrylic paint for the smiling mouth.
- Your popsicle stick snowman ornament is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- Get creative with the hat brim: Glue the brim straight across for a classic look, or tilt it at a cute jaunty angle like we did.
- Turn it into a keepsake: Write your child’s name and the year on the back to create a personalized ornament you’ll love pulling out every Christmas!

How many popsicle sticks do I need to make this snowman ornament?
You’ll need 9 popsicle sticks total — eight for the snowman’s face and one extra to create the hat brim.

What can I use for the nose of my popsicle stick snowman ornament?
We used craft foam, but lots of materials work well! Try:
- Cardstock
- A painted carrot nose (using acrylic paint or a paint marker)
- An orange pipe cleaner shaped into a carrot
- Puffy paint for a fun textured look

How can I decorate the hat of my popsicle stick snowman?
You can dress up the hat any way you like! We added a thin ribbon along the brim as a hat band, but you can also add a a stripe of paint or glue on a pipe cleaner.
For decorating the rest of the hat, we glued on a piece of snowflake confetti. You can also add other fun options, like a jingle bell, pom pom, button, or tiny holly berries.
Or skip the hat completely and make earmuffs instead — just like a larger version of our ping pong ball snowmen! If you choose to add earmuffs, cut a popsicle stick shorter and glue it on the back to connect the rest of the craft sticks.

Putting together this popsicle stick snowman ornament is such a sweet and easy way to add homemade charm to your holiday season. Whether you decorate the hat, add a special message on the back, or make a whole set for the tree, these charming little snowmen are fun to create and look great on display.
