Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Paint the rock white
- Start with a clean, flat rock. If you gather the rock from outside, be sure to wash and dry it before painting.
- Paint the front and sides of the rock white.Allow the paint to dry, and, if you’d like, paint the other side. (We left the bottom of our rock plain.)
- Repeat, adding 2 to 3 coats of white paint in total (or until you’re happy with the coverage).
Step 3: Paint the snowman’s hat and face
- Paint the top 1/3 of the rock any colour (we chose blue). This will be the snowman’s hat. Allow to dry.
- Add details to the hat using a paint marker in a different shade of the same colour (darker blue for us).We outlined the hat and drew small diagonal lines on this one, but you can make whatever hat pattern you like.
- Draw the eyes and mouth in black paint marker. Add a carrot nose to the center of the rock using an orange paint marker.
Step 4: Add a pom pom to the hat
- Add hot glue or tacky glue to a small pom pom and place it on top of the rock (at the top of the hat).
- Your snowman painted rock is complete!
- Now have fun making a whole family of snowmen with different coloured hats!
Helpful Tips:
- Add some sparkle to your snowman! Brush a thin layer of glue or Mod Podge overtop of the dried paint and sprinkle with glitter. Allow to dry and then shake off the excess glitter.
- If you want to preserve your rock painting snowman for years to come, you can seal the rock with Mod Podge, brush-on gloss varnish, or acrylic spray sealer.
What kind of rocks work best for snowman painted rocks?
Smooth, flat rocks are the easiest kind to use for rock painting. You can buy them at your local dollar store, craft store, or on Amazon. There are also complete rock painting kits you can buy!
“Caribbean beach pebbles” work really well for rock painting. If you need a large quantity of rocks, you can find them at landscape supply stores or big box hardware stores, like Home Depot.
What type of paint markers should I use for my rock painting snowman?
Both acrylic and oil-based paint markers give excellent coverage for rock painting.
Oil paint is more durable when dry, but if you’re keeping your snowman painted rocks indoors (or if you plan to seal your rocks), acrylic paint will work fine.
How else can I decorate my snowman painted on rocks?
Besides paint and pom poms, there are plenty of other items you can use to decorate your painted snowman stones. Here are some ideas:
- Add rhinestones to the hat or as part of the face.
- Twist a pipe cleaner into a cone to make a 3D carrot nose.
- Glue ribbon around the base of the hat.
- Use googly eyes instead of paint marker.
- Make earmuffs with a pipe cleaner and small pom poms, like we did for one of our ping pong ball snowmen.
These snowman painted rocks are the perfect blend of cute, creative, and simple to make. Scatter your snowmen in holiday displays, arrange them in a shadow box, or surprise your kids by hiding them around the house.
