Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Create the first half of the watermelon
- Hold a 1.6 inch pom pom maker together and wrap dark green yarn around one side about 20 times.
- Leave the dark green yarn attached to the ball and switch to light green yarn. Wrap in the middle 15 times, leaving a dark green border on either side. Again, leave this yarn attached.
- Switch back to the dark green and wrap another 20 times, across the whole side.
- Wrap the light green in the middle another 15 times. Then go back to the dark green and wrap another 20 times. Cut both yarns, using a latch hook tool or scissor tips to secure the yarn, pushing it under a strand next to it.
- Finish off this side of the pom pom maker by wrapping white yarn 20 times. Again, cut off the yarn and secure the tail.
Step 3: Complete the second half of the watermelon
- Wrap red yarn 40 times around the other half of the pom pom maker. Keep the red yarn attached.
- Wrap black yarn over the red about 4 times, spreading out the lines. Keep the black yarn attached.
- Switch back to red and wrap another 40 times. Then wrap the black yarn 4 times, again keeping the lines separated.
- Finish with another 40 red wraps, or until the pom pom maker is full.
Step 4: Tie the pom pom together
- Close the pom pom maker, latching it together.
- Slide scissors into the gap between the 2 sides of the pom pom maker and cut through the middle of the yarn.
- Cut a 10 inch piece of dark green yarn. Place it in the gap in the middle of the maker.Wrap it around a couple times, so the ends are where the green section is. Tie the yarn in a double or triple knot to secure it.
Step 5: Trim the pom pom into shape
- Unlatch the maker, remove the pom pom, and arrange the colours so they’re in their proper section (red on one side, green on the other, and white in the middle). You can use tweezers or just your fingers to do this.
- Start by cutting the pom pom into a general oval shape.
- Continue trimming and shaping until the pom pom is neatly cut and looks just like a watermelon!
- Your pom pom watermelon is complete!
Step 6: Make a pom pom strawberry
- Begin by wrapping green 30 times, filling 1/3 of the 1.6 inch pom pom maker. Then wrap red 20 times, filling the remaining 2/3. Finally, wrap yellow twice on top of the red, keeping the strands separate. Cut the green off, securing the strand with scissor tips or a latch hook tool, but keep the red and yellow attached.
- Wrap the red 20 more times (only wrapping on top of the red section). Wrap the yellow another 3 times, followed by 20 more red wraps (or until the pom pom maker is full).Cut both yarn ends and secure them.
- On the other side of the pom pom maker, wrap red yarn 40 times, followed by 3 yellow wraps, keeping these separated across the side.
- Wrap red another 40 times, yellow 3 times, finishing with red a final 40 times. Cut off and secure the yarn ends.
- Latch the pom pom maker together. Slide scissors into the center gap of the maker and cut through the yarn, all the way around.
- Cut a 10 inch piece of red yarn. Slip it into the center of the maker and tie it around, securing it in a double or triple knot where the red yarn is.
- Unlatch the maker and remove the pom pom. Gather the green yarn together and hold the pom pom here.
- Cut the red part of the pom pom into a strawberry shape, with a point at the bottom (opposite the green).
- Then push the green yarn down, onto the top of the strawberry, and trim it a little, to resemble leaves.
- Your pom pom strawberry is complete!

Helpful Tips:
- Precision makes a big difference! A pair of sharp fabric or embroidery scissors will help you shape your pom poms cleanly and easily.
- Try to keep your coloured sections tight and evenly spaced to help create distinct lines between colours, especially with the watermelon rind or strawberry seeds.

What size pom pom maker should I use to make fruit pom poms?
We recommend using a pom pom maker between 1-1/2 and 2 inches for these fruit designs. It’s the perfect size for making a variety of yarn fruit.
If you want to make your DIY pom pom fruit in different sizes, you can purchase a set of pom pom makers that includes a variety of sizes.

How can I make other pom pom fruits?
Once you’ve got the hang of making the pom pom watermelon and strawberry, making other types of fruit is a breeze! Here’s how you can make the other fruit seen in our pictures:
- Pineapple: Use a bigger pom pom maker, but follow the same method used for the strawberry (only with pineapple colours). Then trim the pom pom into the shape of a pineapple, instead of making it pointy at the bottom.
- Orange: Make a regular round pom pom using orange yarn. Cut a stem and leaf from felt and attach them with tacky glue or hot glue.
- Lemon: Make a regular pom pom using yellow yarn and trim opposite edges to points.
- Grapes: Use a fork to make smaller pom poms. (Check out our pom pom otter craft to see how to make a pom pom using a fork.) Then glue or tie the grapes together and add a stem and leaf made from felt.
