Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Cut the paper
- To make a paper chrysanthemum you’ll need 1 sheet of 8-1/2 by 11 inch coloured paper.
- Fold the paper in half lengthwise.
- Then cut the paper in half on the fold line. We’ll be using both halves of the paper.
Step 3: Make the petals
- Fold one of the halves in half lengthwise again.
- Then fold the open side of the paper in about 1/2 inch. This fold line will be a guide for where to cut.
- From the folded side of the paper, cut strips in the paper a bit less than 1/4 inch apart. Make the cuts go up until the fold line.
- Continue making cuts until the end of the paper and then open the fold.
- Flip the paper over so the center fold is pointing up. Add glue tape along one of the edges.
- Fold the other long edge of the paper over into the glue tape. Do this slowly and carefully, aligning the edges of the paper well.
- Repeat all of step 3 with the other half of the paper.
Step 4: Put the flower together
- Add more glue tape along the edge of the petals.
- Set the end of a paper straw onto one end of the paper.
- Begin rolling the paper around the straw. Do this carefully, making sure the paper edge lines up neatly as you roll.
- Once you get to the end of the first paper add glue tape to the second. Set the flower onto the paper and roll this piece around as well.
- Once you get to the end hold the paper down with a bit of pressure to make sure it stays in place.
- Your paper chrysanthemum flower is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- Make these paper chrysanthemum flowers in all your favourite colours! Choose bright blooms or pastel shades. A variety pack of coloured paper makes it easy to create a pretty bouquet that looks cheerful and full.
- If you don’t have glue tape you can also use double sided craft tape. For an extra strong hold, add a dot of hot glue on the straw and when securing the last bit of paper in place. This will stop the flower from unrolling over time.

What kind of paper should I use for paper chrysanthemum flowers?
Regular printer paper works perfectly for this craft. It’s easy to cut, rolls smoothly, and has just enough flexibility to create soft, bouncy petals. You can also use cardstock if you want a sturdier flower, but the petals will be firmer and won’t fall quite as naturally.

What can I use for the flower stem?
A paper straw is a great choice for the stem, because it matches the lightweight look of the flower and is easy to attach.
You can also use a wooden skewer or a thin dowel if you want a sturdier stem. If you’d like, paint it green or wrap it with floral tape for a finished look.

Can I make paper chrysanthemum flowers in different sizes?
Yes, it’s easy to change the size of the flowers. For a smaller bloom, use only half a sheet of paper instead of a full one. For a larger flower with longer, floppier petals, fold the full sheet in half and cut the petals from there (instead of cutting the paper in half first). You can also experiment with different strip widths to create different types of petals.

These paper chrysanthemum flowers are super extra in the best way possible. They’re colourful, eye-catching, and the petals are light and springy. It’s such a fun DIY, perfect for spring, summer, or handmade gifts, and you can make them using only a few simple craft supplies!
