Step 3: Add black details
- Use a fine point marker or paint pen to draw a line down the center of the rock, making the wings.
- Then draw curved antennas with the marker.
- Use a fine tip paintbrush to make the black dots on the ladybug’s wings. If you don’t feel confident with your circle painting skills, you can use a paint marker, or even dip the end of the paintbrush handle into the paint and dot it on.
Step 4: Add eyes
- Attach googly eyes to the black section of the ladybug. Our googly eyes were adhesive, but you can also use hot glue or tacky glue to attach them.
- Your ladybug painted rock is complete!
- Optional: Paint irregular shaped rocks green to become leaves, and draw veins with a paint pen or marker.
- Then make a whole cheerful scene with your colourful ladybugs and leaf rocks!
Helpful Tips:
- Acrylic paint works best for painted rocks because it dries quickly and provides vibrant coverage. Consider using outdoor acrylic paint if you plan to place your ladybug rocks outside.
- For a longer-lasting finish, seal your painted ladybug with a clear acrylic sealer. This helps protect the paint from chipping or fading, especially if the rock will be outdoors.

What kind of rocks work best for ladybug rock painting?

- Brush a thin layer of glitter paint over the wings or sprinkle fine glitter onto wet paint for a sparkly finish.
- Use a fine-tip paintbrush or paint markers to add different eye shapes, smiles, or silly faces to the black head section.
- Cut black pipe cleaners into short lengths and glue them to the top of the head for a 3D antennae effect.
- Instead of painting the spots, attach small black rhinestones or sequins to create a textured, shiny look.
- Try hearts or even flower designs on the wings for a whimsical twist.
