Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Attach pressed flowers to rocks
- Choose which side of the rock you want to be the top. Use a paintbrush to apply a thin layer of Mod Podge.
- Pick a flower that will fit well on the rock. Pressed flowers are very fragile, so we find it easiest to grab them with tweezers.
- Place the flower onto the rock where you’d like it to sit.
- Apply more Mod Podge over top of the flower. Be gentle, making sure the petals stay flat on the rock.
- You can also create a little arrangement, adding more than 1 flower to a rock.
Step 3: Allow to dry
- Allow to dry for at least 2 hours or until the Mod Podge is no longer tacky.
- Your pressed flower rocks are complete!
Helpful Tips:
- You can also add a thin coat of Mod Podge to the bottom of the rock. This will keep the look consistent and protect the rocks, especially if you want to put them outside or in a plant pot.
- A pressed flower rock makes a great homemade gift for friends and family! Choose colours that will match their decor, or use their favourite flowers.
What type of flowers are best for making pressed flower rocks?
We definitely recommend choosing flowers with a single layer of thin petals, like little daisies. These stay flat on the rocks very easily.
Any flowers with thick petals, too thick of a center, or multiple layers of petals are a lot harder to smooth down. Add a heavier layer of Mod Podge for thicker flowers and hold them down for a minute or so to help them stay in place.
And if the flower you’re using has layered petals, carefully brush some Mod Podge in-between the layers to keep them stuck down.
Where can I get pressed flowers to make flower rocks?
It’s really easy to press your own flowers! So gather flowers from your garden or while on a nature walk.
But if you don’t have time to press your own flowers, you also buy pressed flowers on Amazon or Etsy. You can purchase a multi-colour set or choose a pack themed to a single colour.
Where’s the best place to get rocks for flower rock art?
We bought our rocks at the craft store, but sometimes you can also find them at the dollar store. Try looking for river rocks or Mexican beach pebbles.
You can also take a look around your yard or neighbourhood to find rocks, but make sure you don’t remove stones from other people’s yards. Some parks and beaches also have laws about removing rocks.
If you have need of a larger amount of rocks you can buy them from a big box store like Home Depot or from a local landscaping company.
