- Wine bottle
- Multi-surface acrylic paint (orange and black)
- Twine
Equipment:
Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Clean and paint the bottle
- Clean an empty wine bottle and remove the label. You can use rubbing alcohol or Goo Gone to do this, or soak the bottle and scrub the label off.
- Paint the bottle the base colour of your character (orange, for us). Allow the first coat to dry.
- Add a second coat of paint and a third, if needed. Allow to dry between coats.
Step 3: Paint the face details
- Start by painting the jack-o-lantern’s eyes with black multi-surface paint. If you don’t feel comfortable free-handing with paint you can draw lightly with pencil first. You can even cut yourself a stencil and trace it onto the bottle.
- Then give your jack-o-lantern a nose and mouth, and allow to dry.
Step 4: Add a finishing touch
- To give your jack-o-lantern a decorative touch, cut a piece of twine about 2 feet long.
- Wrap the twine around the top of the bottle a couple of times, and then tie it into a bow.
- Your Halloween wine bottle is complete!
- Have fun painting all kinds of cute Halloween characters to create fun party decor.
Helpful Tips:
- You can peel and wash the paint off the bottles if you don’t like your design, or if you want to re-use them for Thanksgiving or Christmas decorations.
- Keep in mind that acrylic paint is not food safe. Use your painted bottles for Halloween decor only.
- For extra durability, add a coat of clear acrylic sealer once the paint is dry.

What’s the best paint for making Halloween wine bottles?
Multi-surface acrylic paint works best for this project, since it adheres well to glass. You can also use chalk paint, or even spray paint for the base layer.
Depending on the colour, you may need a few coats for full coverage. Our green paint looked great after one coat, while the purple and orange required more layers.

How can I clean the wine bottles before painting?
Wash the inside of your bottle with soap and water. Then, to remove labels, soak the bottles in hot soapy water for about 30 minutes. Scrub with a stiff brush until the label is gone.
Any remaining residue can be wiped away with rubbing alcohol, Goo Gone, or even cooking oil. Wipe the bottle with rubbing alcohol to remove any oils before painting.

What other characters make fun Halloween wine bottle decorations?
There are endless ways to get creative with these bottles! In addition to pumpkins, ghosts, Frankenstein, and Dracula, you can make:
- Black cat: Paint a black background, add yellow or green eyes and white whiskers.
- Skeleton: Paint a black background, then paint simple white bones. Glow in the dark paint would be extra cool!
- Mummy: Paint a white background, add eyes on a black section, and wrap the bottle with strips of gauze.
- Candy corn: Paint stripes of white, orange, and yellow. Use painter’s tape to create clean lines.

Crafts don’t get much easier (or more fun!) than turning old bottles into Halloween decor. With just a little paint and imagination, you can create a whole lineup of spooky characters that are perfect for display.
Whether you stick with the classic pumpkin and ghost or branch out into other fun ideas, these bottles are such a creative way to add a handmade touch to your Halloween celebrations. You might just find yourself saving bottles year-round to make more!
