DIY Halloween Painted Mason Jars

Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Paint the base coat
- Clean your mason jar well with soap and water, removing any dirt and fingerprints.Then paint the outside of the jar with the base colour.
- Make sure you paint the neck of the jar as well.Allow to dry, and then add a second coat of paint. Apply a third coat, if necessary.
Step 3: Add the jack-o-lantern face
- Once the base layer is completely dry, use a fine tip brush and black paint to add the triangle eyes.You can lightly draw the eye shapes in with pencil first. But don’t push too hard with a really sharp or mechanical pencil, since it may scrape the paint off.
- Then give your jack-o-lantern a smaller triangle nose and a toothy grin.If your Halloween mason jar has more details, like the Frankenstein, let each paint colour dry before outlining or overlapping them.
Step 4: Tie twine around the jar
- Once the paint is dry, cut a 24 inch piece of twine. Wrap it around the neck of the jar and tie a bow at the front of the jar.
- Your Halloween painted mason jar is complete!
- Now have fun creating more Halloween mason jar characters, like Frankenstein, a ghost, and Dracula!
Helpful Tips:
- You can wash the paint off these mason jars after the Halloween season is done and re-use them for Thanksgiving or Christmas decorations.
- Remember that acrylic paint is not food safe. If you want to keep candies or other food in these jars, make sure the items are wrapped.
What type of paint is best for Halloween mason jars?
We highly recommend using multi-surface acrylic paint for your jars. It covers glass better and more evenly than regular acrylic paint does, and it’s fairly inexpensive at the craft store.
But if you’re going to buy special paint anyway, chalk paint is a great choice for glass. And if it’s warm enough outside you can also use spray paint for the base coat.
How can I use these Halloween painted mason jars?
These Halloween mason jars make an adorable holder for all kinds of items. Use them on your desk to hold wrapped candy, pencils, or markers. Or place them on a Halloween party table to hold straws or cutlery!
You can also place a flameless tealight in them, like we did for our 4th of July mason jar lanterns.
What other Halloween mason jar characters can I paint?
We had fun making our vampire, ghost, pumpkin, and zombie. But there are lots of other cool Halloween characters can you paint. Here are some ideas:
- Black cat: Cut the ears from craft foam, or leave most of the jar mouth clear with 2 triangle ears at the front.
- Witch or wizard: Paint the facial details and make a witch’s hat from cardstock.
- Mummy: Paint the eyes and then Mod Podge on some crepe paper for texture!
- Skeleton: You can paint a skull face or draw a whole skeleton! Check out our bag of bones for inspiration.
- Spider: Choose a base colour and then paint a round body in the center of the jar with 8 legs coming out the sides.
