What’s the best yarn for making a crochet basket?
The best choice of yarn for making crochet baskets is super bulky yarn. This weight of yarn creates a sturdy fabric that helps the basket hold its shape. If you can’t find size 6 cotton yarn, you can also buy 5mm cotton macrame cord.
Or if you want to use up yarn from your stash, you can also hold two or three strands of worsted weight yarn together. This will create a similar thickness and sturdiness (as seen in our small and large baskets).
We made our baskets with cotton yarn, which is a great choice because of its durability. It’s also washable and less stretchy than acrylic. That means your basket will stand up better over time, especially if you plan to use it for storage. Acrylic can work too (and comes in lots of colours), but cotton generally gives a crisper, longer-lasting finish.

What size basket does this pattern make?
By following the instructions above, you’ll end up with a medium-sized basket that’s about 6-1/2 inches tall and 7 inches across.
Our Etsy pattern also includes variations for a small basket (4 inches tall, 4-1/2 inches across) and a large basket (7 inches tall, 7-1/2 inches across). These sizes are made with a double strand of worsted weight yarn.

How long does it take to make a crochet basket?
It takes about 2 hours to make the medium basket.
To make the other sizes of baskets, using double layered worsted weight yarn, it takes roughly 1-1/2 hours (small basket) and 3 hours (large basket).
Will crochet baskets hold their shape?
Crochet baskets made with super bulky yarn will hold their shape fairly well, though the sides will still be soft and flexible. If you use double-stranded worsted weight yarn, the baskets will still be sturdy enough to use, but they’ll turn out a bit more floppy.
If you want your basket to be extra firm, you can use a fabric stiffener, or block and stuff the basket while it dries to keep its shape better.

Crochet projects don’t have to be complicated to be rewarding, and this little basket is proof of that. With just a few simple stitches, you can create a functional piece that you’ll be proud to display.
Whether you’re adding storage to your craft room, organizing small items around the house, or making a thoughtful handmade gift, this basket pattern is a great one to keep in your back pocket. Once you’ve finished your first, don’t be surprised if you find yourself making a whole collection in different colours and sizes!
