Watch the step-by-step video tutorial:
Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Attach chains to a hair elastic
- Put the foundation chain through the hair elastic.
- Being careful not to twist your foundation, slip stitch into the first chain to join, making a loop around the elastic.
Step 3: Crochet in the round
- Insert 1 single crochet into each chain around.
- When you get to the first single crochet, single crochet into it — do not join rounds.Continue working single crochet into each stitch around, working in continuous rounds (spiral).
- Repeat until you’re happy with the “scrunchiness” of the tube.Your work should be long enough to meet (or even overlap) when the elastic is fully stretched out.
Step 4: Finish off the scrunchie
- Cut your yarn, leaving a 12 inch tail.
- Fasten off the yarn.
- Using a yarn needle and the long tail, sew the two ends of the tube together. Make sure your work isn’t twisted when you do this.
- Weave in the ends and cut the excess yarn.
- Your crochet scrunchie is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- Use an “ouchless” hair elastic to make your crochet scrunchie. The metal crimp on some types of elastics will snag your yarn.
- Make sure you keep crocheting past when the sides of the tubes meet. Stretch out the elastic to check your progress, and keep going around for the best “scrunch”.

What yarn is best for making a crochet scrunchie?
You can use either DK (size 3, light) or worsted weight (size 4, medium) yarn to make this scrunchie. Acrylic yarn is a great choice for textured hair — it’s smooth and won’t get caught in curls.
If you have thinner or silkier hair, cotton yarn is recommended. The texture of the cotton yarn will help it stay in place.
How to make a crochet scrunchie with thinner yarn?
We made some of our scrunchies using DK yarn. This takes longer, but creates a really small, neat stitch. To make this scrunchie with DK yarn, use a 4.5mm hook and start with 21 chains.

How many rows does each crochet scrunchie need?
To make a scrunchie with DK weight yarn, we crocheted about 100 – 110 rounds. For the scrunchies we made with worsted weight yarn, we did between 65 – 75 rows.
Follow these numbers to make crochet scrunchies just like ours, or if you don’t want to count rounds, simply use your best judgement until the scrunchie looks how you want. The exact number of rows will also differ based on the stretchiness of your elastic.

How can I adjust the size of these crochet scrunchies?
To change the size of the scrunchie, without changing the yarn or hook size, adjust the number of chains at the beginning. Use fewer chains for a scrunchie that’s smaller around, or more chains for larger, chunky scrunchies.

Crochet in the round around a hair elastic to make this super cute crochet scrunchie! Scrunchies are soft and gentle on hair, and you can make them to match all your outfits!
Crochet scrunchies also make great homemade gifts or small items to sell at craft fairs.
