Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Cut the felt pieces
- Print one of our free Christmas pencil topper templates and cut out the shape.Find the pattern link for the Christmas tree pencil topper in the materials list above, or scroll down below the tutorial.
- Trace the pattern and cut 2 tree shapes from green felt.
Step 3: Sew the felt pieces together
- Place 1 felt tree on top of the other and line up the edges.
- Thread a needle with green thread. Push the needle through both layers of felt. Tie the end of the thread in a double knot.
- Sew a running stitch along the outside of the shape, going up and down through the layers.(You can also do a blanket stitch for a fancier finish.)
- Continue the stitch almost all the way around. Leave a 1 inch gap at the bottom, where the pencil will go. Stitch back and forth through the last stitch several times to anchor it in place. Finish off the thread by pushing it up through the top layer of felt and cutting the excess.
Step 4: Decorate the tree
- Add a very small amount of hot glue to a sequin.
- Press the sequin onto the front of the tree.
- Repeat, adding more sequin ornaments to the front of the tree.(You can also sew the sequins on before you connect the two sides of the tree, if you don’t want to glue them.)
- Flip the tree over and add sequins to the other side too.
- Insert the top of a pencil into the unsewn part of the tree.
- Your Christmas pencil topper is complete!
- Now have fun making all the other festive designs!
Helpful Tips:
- You can cut both pieces of felt at the same time. Pin the felt and pattern piece together if you’re worried about them moving as you cut.
- If you don’t feel comfortable sewing your Christmas pencil toppers, don’t worry! You can use hot glue or fabric glue to stick the felt together. Check out our felt dragon post for more instructions on how to do this.

What type of felt is best for making Christmas pencil toppers?
Soft craft felt from the dollar store or craft store works well to make Christmas pencil toppers. As a bonus, this keeps the cost down and means you can make lots of these pencil topper crafts!
But if you think your pencil toppers will get played with a lot, you may want to use wool felt instead. It’s more expensive, but it holds up to frequent handling better, whereas cheaper felt can pill if it’s played with too much.
How can I decorate my DIY Christmas pencil toppers?
For the Christmas tree in our step-by-step tutorial, you can use pom poms, different shaped sequins, or rhinestones as ornaments. You can even use sparkly pipe cleaners as a garland!
We used small black beads for the eyes of our reindeer and snowman, but googly eyes would also work well. And pom poms make great noses, instead of cutting them from felt.
If you want a fancier pencil topper you can embroider on the faces, or add cute holiday designs to the Christmas tree, star, or Santa hat.
How else can I use this Christmas pencil topper craft?
These DIY Christmas pencil toppers have so many possible uses besides topping pencils! Here are some fun ideas:
- Make sure you leave a big enough space and use the pencil topper as a cute finger puppet!
- Hide little treats in them for your kids to find a surprise each day.
- Put them on small skewers and use them as festive drink decorations.
- Place them on long toothpicks and let them top holiday cupcakes.
- Insert craft sticks and then tuck them into potted houseplants. So festive!
