How to Make Pot of Gold Slime
Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Mix the first ingredients
- Pour 1/2 cup of clear glue into a bowl.
- Add 1-1/2 teaspoons of baking soda. Stir until it’s well dissolved in the glue.
- To colour the slime, add about 1/8 teaspoon gold mica powder.
- Then add jumbo gold glitter into the glue mixture. These pieces will represent gold coins!
Step 3: Activate the slime
- To activate the slime add 2-1/4 teaspoons of contact lens solution.
- Stir well, until the slime comes away from the bowl and you can’t stir anymore.
- Then pick up the slime and stretch and knead it with your hands. It might be sticky at first, but will pull away from your hands as you work it.Add a few more drops of contact solution at a time, if needed.
Step 4: Wait overnight (optional)
- Optional: Leave your slime to sit overnight in an airtight container. This will release air bubbles in the slime and allow the colour to darken into a shiny, pearlescent gold.
- Your pot of gold slime is complete!
- Place your gold slime in a leprechaun pot if you have one (or even a repurposed Halloween cauldron!) for some fun sensory play.
- You’ll definitely be able to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow with this easy slime recipe!
Helpful Tips:
- Go heavy on the glitter: Add a really generous amount of large gold glitter so your slime has lots of “gold coins” mixed throughout.
- Add activator slowly: Start with the initial amount, then add a few more drops at a time until the slime is stretchy and no longer sticky. There’s a fine line between perfect slime and slime that’s overactivated and tough.

What’s the best way to colour pot of gold slime?
For the best “treasure” look, we love using gold mica powder because it gives the slime a shimmery, pearlescent finish. We also add large gold glitter so it looks like leprechaun gold coins are mixed right into the slime.
If you don’t have mica powder, you can colour your slime with a small amount of gold metallic paint instead — just start with a little and mix well.

What ways can I play with this pot of gold slime?
This pot of gold slime is perfect for St. Patrick’s Day sensory play! You can add rainbow charms, or even make a simple rainbow from craft foam or construction paper to go with your slime setup.
Kids will also love pressing plastic gold coins or shamrock charms into the slime. You can also play with a little “cauldron” so you truly have a pot of gold to place at the end of the rainbow.

What’s the best activator for making pot of gold slime?
Our go-to activator is contact lens solution. It’s inexpensive and lasts a long time, but it does need baking soda to activate properly.
You can also use a borax activator (usually 1 teaspoon borax dissolved in 1 cup of warm water). It works well and doesn’t need baking soda, but it’s easier to over-activate, so add it slowly.
Another option is Elmer’s Magical Liquid. It’s very convenient and works well, but it tends to be more expensive.

This pot of gold slime is a sparkling way to bring a little St. Patrick’s Day magic into your day. Whether you’re using it for a party activity, a holiday sensory bin, or just a fun slime-making session at home, this glittery gold slime is sure to be a hit. Set it out with a few festive add-ins, let kids mix and explore, and enjoy a hands-on activity that’s simple to make and extra fun to play with!
