How to Make Crunchy Slime
Materials:
- Clear glue
- Baking soda
- Food colouring (colour of choice)
- Contact lens solution
- Styrofoam beads
Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Mix the first ingredients
- Pour 1/2 cup of clear glue into a bowl.
- Add 1 teaspoon baking soda and stir to combine.
- Add 2 to 3 drops of food colouring in the colour of your choice. If you want a darker colour, add more. Stir to combine.
Step 3: Activate the slime
- Pour in 1-1/2 teaspoons of contact lens solution.
- Stir to combine until the glue mixture pulls away from the side of the bowl. It will be thicky and gloopy, but still quite sticky.
Step 4: Add foam beads
- Measure out 1 cup of foam beads. Add about 1/3 of them.
- Stir the foam balls carefully into the slime (they’re pretty staticky, so if you’re too rough they’ll fly out of the bowl).
- Add another 1/3 of the beads and stir. Then add the last bit and use your hands to push them into the slime.
Step 5: Stretch the slime and then let it rest
- Once all the foam beads are part of the slime, pick it up and begin stretching and kneading it. It’ll still be somewhat sticky, but it shouldn’t stick to your hands.
- Place the slime in an airtight container and let it rest for at least a few hours, or overnight.
- Your crunchy slime is complete!Stretch the slime out to get air in it and bring it back together and squish to hear the popping and crackling sounds.
Helpful Tips:
- Leave your slime slightly under-activated before adding the foam beads: A slightly sticky base helps the foam beads mix in better. If the slime is too firm or rubbery, the beads won’t stick as well.
- Let your slime rest after mixing in the beads: As the slime settles, it becomes less sticky and easier to play with. This also helps prevent the foam beads from falling out during play.
- Stretch slowly and knead gently to reduce bead fallout: Crunchy slime stretches beautifully, but fast pulls can cause beads to pop out. Slow stretches and gentle squeezing give you the best sound and texture with minimal mess.

What’s the best glue to use for crunchy slime?
We found that clear glue gave the best crackly sound and texture — especially after resting overnight. White school glue also worked, but it didn’t produce quite as much crunch.
We also tested Elmer’s Glue-All, but the foam beads didn’t hold well and this glue combined with contact lens solution created an odd texture.

What type of foam beads work best in crunchy slime?
Micro or mini foam beads are the easiest to mix in and give the best crunch. We used white beads in a clear slime base, tinted with food colouring.
We also liked the idea of using colourful beads in a clear or white base, but when we did this the colour from the foam bled into the slime by the next day, creating a grey colour. 😕

What else can I use to make crunchy slime?
If you don’t have foam beads, try these other crunchy add-ins:
- Sequins
- Pony beads
- Mini acrylic gems (best for older kids, since they can feel sharp if squeezed too hard)
- Glitter confetti
- Small plastic buttons
Each of these gives the slime a different feel, look, and sound — so have fun experimenting to find your favourite!

Crunchy slime is seriously one of the most fun slimes to make and play with. Between the bumpy texture and the crisp, crackling sounds, it’s a total sensory win!
