How to Make a Crochet Hat Ornament
Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn (Main colour and white)
- Crochet Hat Ornament Pattern (No Ads)
Equipment:
Instructions:
Find what you need:
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Foundation:
Row 1:
- Insert 1 single crochet into each chain across. Turn your work.
Rows 2-23:
- Chain 1 and insert 1 single crochet into each stitch across. Turn at the end of each row. (23 rows total)
Form the hat:
- Fold the rectangle in half crosswise. Slip stitch the 2 sides together.
- Fasten off the yarn, leaving an 8 inch tail.
- Turn the tube right side out, so the seam is inside.
- Use the tail to sew a running stitch around the top opening of the hat.
- Pull the tail tight to close off the opening.
- Make a knot to keep the top closed.(To do this, put the needle back through the last stitch in the opposite direction. Wrap the yarn around the needle a few times and pull the needle through.)
- Fold the bottom of the hat up, creating a cuff about 2 cm tall.
Make a pom pom:
- Cut a piece of white yarn about 6 inches long.
- Place this yarn in-between your pointer and middle fingers.
- Then wrap white yarn around those 2 fingers about 30 times.
- Grab the strand of yarn that’s at the front of your hand (the one between your fingers) and bring it toward the palm of your hand.
- Tie the ends of this strand together, around the wraps.
- Carefully remove the yarn from your fingers. Tighten the yarn and secure the bundle with a double knot.
- Cut through the loops of yarn, creating a rough pom pom shape.
- Begin cutting the yarn ends down to create a nice rounded shape.
- Continue giving the pom pom a “haircut”, shaping it until it’s perfectly round and about 1 inch in size.
Attach the pom pom to the hat:
- Sew the tail from the top of the hat up though the pompom.
- Bring the needle and yarn back down through the pom pom and the edge of the hat.
Add an ornament hanger:
- Cut another piece of white yarn, at least 6 inches long.
- Attach the yarn to your needle. Starting from inside the hat, bring the yarn out through the top edge of the hat. Then push the needle up into the center of the pom pom.
- Bring the needle and yarn back down, going first through the pom pom and then the edge of the hat.
- As you pull the yarn down and remove the needle, hold the yarn above the pom pom so it stays in a loop.
- Turn the hat inside out momentarily and tie the 2 white yarn ends together in a knot, close to the ends.
- Pull the loop up as far as you can.
- Tie the tail from the hat to the tails of the loop.
- Optional: Use the other hat tail to sew a running stitch along the cuff, going through both layers to keep the cuff in place.(Alternatively, the cuff stays in place quite well on its own, so you can weave in this end as usual.)
- Your crochet hat ornament is complete!
- Now have fun making a whole collection of mini toques in all your favourite colours!

What size beanie does this crochet hat ornament pattern make?
This pattern creates an ornament that’s about 3 inches tall (including the pom pom) and 2 inches wide at the bottom.
How can I adjust the size of this crochet hat ornament?
To make the hat larger or smaller, simply adjust the number of chains in your foundation and add or remove rows from the rectangle before you slip stitch it together.
You can also size up by using bulky (weight 5) yarn and a larger hook for a chunkier, cozy look.

Do I have to make my own pom pom for this crochet hat ornament?
No, you can also attach a pre-made pom pom to the top of your hat. Sew it on in the same way as the yarn pom pom, or simply glue it on.
Use a typical craft pom pom from the dollar store, or try to find ones that are more fluffy. Glitter pom poms have extra strands that make them look more fuzzy.

There’s something extra special about filling your Christmas tree with handmade ornaments, and these tiny crochet hats capture that cozy holiday spirit perfectly. They’re quick and relaxing to make, and it’s a joy to dig into your yarn stash and use up your favourite colours.
Each little hat feels like a keepsake, and it’s such a fun and creative way to add a personal touch to your Christmas decor. These mini beanies are also perfect items for a holiday craft sale or giving away as a homemade gift.
