Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Add alcohol ink to plastic wrap
- Prepare a protected surface to make your bowl. We covered a baking sheet with parchment paper. You’ll also want to wear gloves when working with alcohol ink, as it stains very easily.
- Place a piece of plastic wrap on the tray, large enough to cover the outside of your bowl.
- Add drops of alcohol ink across the plastic wrap. Start with one colour, placing it randomly.
- Next add a complementary colour of alcohol ink that will blend well with the first colour. Place these drops between the first ones.
Step 3: Wrap the bowl
- Set a ceramic bowl onto the plastic wrap.
- Fold the plastic wrap up around the bowl. Don’t smooth the plastic — you want it to be crinkly and have bumps.
- Now flip the bowl upside-down and leave to dry for 24 hours.
Step 4: Remove the plastic wrap and seal
- Once your bowl is dry, carefully peel off the plastic wrap. You’ll see the super cool pattern that the ink and crinkles of the plastic wrap have left.
- Bring the bowl outside (or to a well ventilated area) and set on a protected surface, like newspaper. Spray with an acrylic spray sealer.Allow to dry at least 1 hour before touching, and 24 hours for a full cure.
- Add rubbing alcohol to a paper towel and wipe the top and inside of the rim to remove the excess alcohol ink.
- Your alcohol ink crinkle bowl is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- Use PPE when working with alcohol inks: Wear nitrile gloves to protect your skin from staining, and work in a well-ventilated area. If you’re in an enclosed space, wear an N95 rated mask, as the vapors from the quick drying ink can affect your respiratory tract.
- Choose colours that blend well together: Alcohol inks spread and mix quickly, so pick 2 or 3 colours that complement each other to avoid muddy results. Analogous colours (ones next to each other on the colour wheel, like pink, purple, and blue) tend to blend beautifully, while too many contrasting shades can turn brown.
- Don’t like your design? Use rubbing alcohol to remove the alcohol ink and try again!

Do I need to seal my alcohol ink bowl?
Yes! Sealing your alcohol ink crinkle bowls is highly recommended to protect the vibrant colours and prevent smudging or fading.
We recommend using an acrylic spray sealer. You can choose from matte, satin, or gloss finishes, and some are even UV resistant. The spray can sometimes cause the ink to run slightly, especially if applied too heavily — but we found it didn’t affect our final designs.
A light, even coat works best to lock everything in place. Just be sure to spray in a well-ventilated area and follow the product’s instructions for best results.
You can also use Mod Podge, but keep in mind that it leaves visible brush marks on the surface.

What type of bowl do I need to make this alcohol ink craft?
Regular ceramic bowls from Walmart, or even the dollar store, work well. White or off-white bowls will show off the colours and design the best.
You can also do this technique on glass bowls, though it will give you a different look because of the clear background.
Is my alcohol ink bowl food safe?
No, these alcohol ink bowls are not food-safe, even after sealing. Alcohol ink and most sealers are not designed for surfaces that come into contact with food.
These bowls are best used as decorative pieces. Think trinket dishes, jewelry holders, or vibrant shelf decor. If you’d like to use them for anything functional, make sure it’s for dry, non-edible items only.

How long do these alcohol ink crinkle bowls need to dry?
You’ll need to wait at least 24 hours after making your alcohol ink bowl to remove the plastic wrap.
After applying the spray sealer, it will dry to the touch within a few minutes. However, we recommend waiting at least an hour before touching your bowl.
For a fully cured and durable finish, let the bowl sit undisturbed for at least 24 hours before using or displaying it. This ensures the sealer has time to harden and fully protect your artwork.

These alcohol ink crinkle bowls are such a fun and creative way to experiment with colour and texture. Whether you’re making one as a gift or just playing with a new technique, the results are always unique — and absolutely stunning!
With just a few supplies and a bit of plastic wrap, you can turn a simple ceramic bowl into a vibrant piece of handmade art. We hope you love the process as much as the final result!
