Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Make the petals
- Print our free felt poppy template (find the link in the materials list above!) and cut out the petal.
- Place the petal pattern on a piece of red felt. Trace around it with chalk or a gel pen. Then cut out the petal.Repeat 4 more times so you have 5 petals in total.
Step 3: Join the petals together
- With a threaded needle, sew a running stitch along the flat edge of one petal.
- Pull the petal down to the end of the thread.
- Add the remaining petals to the thread in the same way.
- Gather the petals together on the thread, pushing the bottoms toward each other.
- Pull the thread tight and tie the ends together in a double knot. This will gather the petals together into a flower shape.Cut off the excess thread near the knot.
- Arrange each petal so that one side is over the previous petal and the other side is under the next petal.
Step 4: Make the center of the flower
- Take a black pipe cleaner and roll it around itself into a flat circle.
- Add hot glue to the pipe cleaner spiral and press it to the center of your petals, covering the center gap.
Step 5: Make the poppy’s stem
- Fold over the top 1/2 inch of a green pipe cleaner.
- Add hot glue to the fold and press the glued pipe cleaner onto the back center of the poppy.
- Your felt poppy is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- These instructions make a poppy that’s 3-1/2 inches in diameter, excluding the stem. Cut the stem to your desired length.
- This craft is a great way to use up scrap felt – you only need a few small pieces to make the poppy!
- Glue a brooch pin onto the back instead of a stem and wear your poppy!

What is a running stitch?
The running stitch (also known as the straight stitch) is a simple stitch made by inserting the needle up and down through the fabric at uniform distances. This creates a dashed thread line across the fabric, making it easy to gather the petals together.
What can I use for the center and stem of my DIY felt poppy if I don’t have pipe cleaners?
You can glue a black button or pom pom onto the center of the poppy in place of the spiral pipe cleaner. And for the stem, floral wire or painted wooden skewers will also work well.
What can I do with my DIY felt poppies?
These felt poppies look awesome on display in a vase. Place them on the mantel or use them as a centerpiece!
But you can also leave the pipe cleaner stem off and turn your felt poppy into a barrette, badge/pin, or magnet. You can even sew the felt flower onto tote bags or backpacks as added decoration, or place it on a giftbox as decoration!
Make this felt poppy craft in all the colours of the rainbow and use the colourful blooms to decorate your space all year long! Or stick with classic red poppies to create a meaningful craft for Remembrance Day, Veterans Day, or Memorial Day.
