How to Use Alcohol Ink on Glass
Watch the step-by-step video tutorial:
Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Add the first colour of alcohol ink
- Place a clean glass upside-down on a protected surface. We added parchment paper to a baking tray. You also need to wear gloves when working with alcohol inks as they stain and don’t wash off easily.
- Choose colours of alcohol ink that complement each other and look good when blended. We used green, blue, and white here.
- Add a drop of alcohol ink to the bottom (current top) edge of the glass. It will drip down the side to the bottom (actual top) of the glass.
- Add more drops of the same colour, spacing them a bit apart. Enhance the colour by adding another drop on top of the first one.
Step 3: Continue decorating the glass
- Select another colour and place drops between the previous colour. It’s okay if the colours blend a bit.
- Then add your third colour overtop. We used white to soften and blend the 2 previous colours.
- Repeat around the whole glass and allow to dry for a few hours.
Step 4: Clean the rim and seal
- Once dry, flip the glass over and clean the rim with a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol.
- When the alcohol ink is completely dry (you may want to wait 24 hours to be safe), brush on a coat of gloss Mod Podge. This will seal the alcohol inks. Allow to dry.
- Your alcohol ink glass is complete!
- Have fun making this alcohol ink glass art in all different colours!
Helpful Tips:
- Use PPE when working with alcohol inks. Wear nitrile gloves to protect your skin from staining, and work in a well-ventilated area. If you’re in an enclosed space, wear an N95 rated mask, as the vapors from the quick drying ink can affect your respiratory tract.
- If you don’t like how your alcohol ink design is turning out, don’t worry! You can wipe the glass clean with rubbing alcohol and start fresh — just make sure to do this before the ink has been sealed.
- Tilt your glass while applying the ink to create more dramatic drips and blends. Let gravity do the work for a truly unique flowing effect!

Can I drink from these alcohol ink glasses?
No, these glasses are for decorative use only. Once alcohol ink is applied, the surface is no longer food safe — even if it’s sealed.
Instead, use your finished pieces as beautiful candle holders, pencil holders, or vases. This artful shelf decor also makes a great one-of-a-kind gift!

Is alcohol ink art on glass permanent?
Alcohol ink can stain glass permanently, but without sealing, it’s likely to fade or scratch off over time — especially if touched frequently. For best results, always seal your finished design to protect the colours and preserve your artwork.
How do you seal alcohol ink on glass?
You can seal alcohol ink on glass with matte or gloss Mod Podge, but be sure the ink is completely dry before brushing it on — otherwise, the colours may bleed or smear.
For a smoother finish without streaks or brush marks, we recommend using a clear acrylic spray sealer. It’s quick, easy to apply, and keeps your design looking crisp and vibrant!

Can I use alcohol ink on any type of glass?
Yes! Alcohol ink works well on most non-porous glass surfaces like wine glasses, mason jars, vases, or candle holders. Just make sure the surface is clean and dry before you begin.
How to prep before using alcohol inks on glass?
Wash and dry your glass. Then wipe down the outside of the glass with rubbing alcohol to remove any oils, fingerprints, or dust. This helps the ink stick better and creates a cleaner, more vibrant result.

Using alcohol ink on glass is such a fun and creative way to make beautiful, one-of-a-kind art pieces! Whether you’re decorating candle holders, making gifts, or simply experimenting with colour, this technique is easy to learn and so satisfying to watch in action.
Just remember to seal your design and keep these pieces decorative. Then sit back and enjoy the vibrant results of your handmade glass art!
