There is nothing better than homemade whipped cream! But have you ever wondered how to make whipped cream at home? Don’t be afraid to skip the canned stuff – it’s super easy to make your own whipped cream and I’m going to show you exactly how to make it both by hand and with a hand mixer.
To make homemade whipped cream you need to buy cream that is labelled as “whipping cream”. Do not use table cream or half and half cream. The fat content is too low, and it won’t work.
How to make whipped cream with a hand mixer
I personally like my whipped cream without anything in it. But if you want a little more flavour, here is an easy whipped cream recipe:
- 1 cup of whipping cream
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 Tbsp sugar
Whip all the ingredients together until the whipped cream gets firm and holds its own shape.
You really don’t need to measure it out, but generally you should aim to use about 1/2 cup to 1 cup of whipping cream. One cup of whipping cream turns into enough for about 8 portions. I used a little over 1/2 cup for mine today:
I used the whisk beaters on my hand mixer, but the regular beaters would work just fine as well. If you are adding the vanilla or sugar, this would be the time to do it:
Turn the hand beater on medium, keeping them constantly moving in small circles around the bowl:
You can see here at 2 minutes and 31 seconds the consistency of the whipped cream was starting to get thicker:
It took a little over 4 minutes to get the whipped cream to the right consistency with the hand mixer:
Blend it until the whipping cream starts to get fluffy and forms peaks:
It should be able to hold its own shape:
Serve it as soon as possible after mixing. You really don’t want to do this too much in advance. It can be refrigerated, but the consistency changes a bit.
How to make whipped cream by hand
In the spirit of being thorough, I am also going to show you how to make whipped cream by hand. You can definitely make whipped cream by hand, but it is MUCH easier to make it with a hand mixer! You can get a hand mixer for less than $15!
To speed up the whipping process, put the bowl and the whisk in the freezer for 30 minutes before you plan to whip it. It will still work if you don’t have time to do this, it will just take a little longer:
So again, I used 1/2 cup of whipping cream which is enough for about 4 generous portions:
After 6 minutes of using a whisk and whipping by hand, the heavy whipping cream wasn’t showing any signs of actually being whipped and my arms were getting tired!
So how long does it take to make whipped cream by hand? It took a little over 10 minutes of hand whisking, which may not sound like a lot, but trust me, it is HARD to whip by hand for a full 10 minutes! Again, I highly recommend just buying an inexpensive hand mixer!
You can definitely get the same consistency just by using a whisk. It still got nice and fluffy and formed peaks, it’s just that it was a lot more work.
Serve it on fresh berries, add it on top of your coffee, pie, ice cream, cake or pretty much any dessert.
