Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Paint the base colour
- Paint the rock your green base colour. Paint each rock a different shade of green. Allow the paint to dry.(You can also start with a white base coat, which should allow fewer coats.)
- Add a second coat of paint and, again, allow to dry. Add a third coat, if necessary.
- Paint the backs of the rocks as well. They’ll also need at least a second coat.
Step 3: Add details to the cactus
- Once the paint is completely dry, use a paint pen in a different shade of green to cover both sides of the rock with cactus spike details.
- Use a different green, or even a yellow, to add different details to your other rock. “V”s, asterisks, and angled lines all work to make the rocks look like cacti.
Step 4: Place your cactus in a pot
- Fill a clay pot with white sand (cover the drainage hole with a piece of tape first).
- Then nestle the rocks into the sand, creating your cactus garden.
- Your cactus painted rocks are complete!
- Decorate your home by making more pots of different rock cacti!
Helpful Tips:
- Choose smooth, flat rocks. Flatter rocks are easier to paint and display better in your cactus garden.
- Use a variety of green shades. Mixing dark and light green paints gives your cactus arrangement a more realistic and interesting look!

What kind of paint works best for cactus rocks?
Acrylic paint is ideal for cactus rock painting because it sticks well to rocks and dries quickly. A multi-surface acrylic paint will adhere best, requiring fewer coats.
You can also paint a white base coat over the rock before painting it green in order to reduce the number of coats it’ll need. This is especially helpful when you want to use a light green paint for your cactus rock.

Do I need to seal my rock cactus?
It isn’t completely necessary to seal the cactus painted rocks, but it will help protect the paint from scratches. And if you want to place your cactus garden outside, we do recommend it.
You can use a brush on sealant, like Mod Podge Outdoor, or a spray on form, like Krylon Clear Gloss Spray. Both types work well.

What type of paint markers should I use on my cactus rocks?
Both acrylic paint pens and oil-based paint markers give excellent coverage for rock painting. Oil paint is more durable when dry, but if you’re keeping your rock cacti indoors (or if you plan to seal them), acrylic paint will work fine.

Painting your own cactus rocks is such a cheerful way to bring a pop of green into your life, without the fuss of keeping real plants alive. With just a handful of supplies and a little creativity, you can craft a whole garden of adorable rock cacti that will last forever. So grab some rocks and paint and have fun making your own mini desert oasis!
