Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Make the sheep's legs
- Place a 12 inch black pipe cleaner beside a ruler. Fold it at the 1-1/2 inch mark so that the pipe cleaner is doubled up.
- Bend the double layer of pipe cleaner down, creating a tall "L" shape. Line up the base of the "L" with the start of the ruler.
- Bend the single pipe cleaner down at the 1 inch mark. Fold it back up again, creating another 1-1/2 inch long leg.
- Cut off the excess pipe cleaner at the top.Repeat to make a second set of legs.
Step 3: Attach the legs to a hard boiled egg
- Add a line of hot glue towards one end of a cooled hard boiled egg or a fake plastic egg.
- Place the flat 1 inch part of the legs into the glue, with the legs pointing away from the egg.
- Repeat, adding the second set of legs closer to the other end of the egg.
- Set the egg down with the legs towards you and the smaller top facing up. This will be the sheep's face and should be left uncovered. You can place the egg on a bottle cap or small roll of tape to keep it from rolling away.
Step 4: Glue pom poms to the egg
- Add a line of glue just in front of the top (front) pipe cleaner legs.
- Begin adding pom poms into the glue, one by one.
- Continue adding glue and pom poms around the egg, leaving the face uncovered.Be sure to place the pom poms as close together as you can.
- Add a second row of pom poms behind the first.Place them so that they go between the pom poms of the previous row. This will help prevent any gaps.
- Work towards the back of the sheep, adding the pom poms into the glue.As you get closer to the back, and work around the back legs, the rows won't be as neat. Try to fill the space as best you can.
- Finally, continue to push the pom poms close together as you fill in the bottom of the sheep.
Step 5: Add ears and a face
- Fold a small piece of black cardstock in half.
- Draw a tall, curved "U" shape, about 1 inch long, onto the paper.
- Cut out the shape through both layers of paper to create the sheep's ears.
- Add a small dot of glue to the straight edge of the ear.
- Place the ear under a pom pom at the side of the sheep's face. Press the pom pom back down to keep the ear in place. Then bend the ear so it sticks out to the side.Repeat for the second ear on the other side.
- Use a fine tipped black marker to draw a "Y" shaped mouth and dot eyes on the sheep. You can also add little eyelashes, if you'd like.
- Your sheep Easter egg is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- Don’t eat the hardboiled eggs after using marker and glue on them. If made on a hardboiled egg these sheep can be displayed for 1 – 2 weeks before they should be thrown out.
- You can also paint the sheep’s face with a fine point brush and acrylic paint. Or use the end of a wooden skewer to add the little details.
What type of egg is used to make a sheep Easter egg?
We used hard boiled brown eggs, but you could also blow out the egg and use the empty eggshell if you want to leave your Easter egg sheep for longer.
You can also paint a dyable plastic egg. Or use an Easter egg made from styrofoam, paper mache, or colourful plastic.
What if I don’t have pom poms to make this sheep Easter egg?
If you don’t have pom poms you can also use cotton balls to make this adorable Easter egg sheep! Or recycle some packing peanuts, scraps of yarn, bubble wrap, or anything else you think looks like wool.
