Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Paint the egg and cut out the template shapes
- Decide which farm animal you'd like to make and paint a real or faux egg the base colour. (Pink for the pig.)Allow to dry and add a second coat of paint, if necessary. You can also use traditional egg dye to colour the egg pink.
- While the paint is drying, print the template (link in the materials list above). Cut out the template pieces for your chosen animal.
- Trace the template pieces onto a colour of paper or cardstock that matches your animal's base colour.
- Then cut out the pieces.Be sure to cut little vertical slits on the bottom of the pig's ears!
- Gather all the pieces for the pig Easter egg. You'll also need 2 pink 6 inch pipe cleaners (or one regular 12 inch pipe cleaner cut in half).
Step 3: Attach the template pieces to the Easter egg
- Add glue tape onto the back of the snout piece.
- Place the snout in the center of the egg.
- Add glue tape to the bottom of a pig's ear on one of the sides. Bring the other side of the ear over on top of the glue and press down to create curved 3D ears.
- Attach the ear to the top of the egg and then repeat with the second ear on the other side.Make sure the 2nd ear has the opposite side glued on top.
Step 4: Make and attach the pig's legs
- Fold one of the pink pipe cleaners in half and separate the two sides so it's shaped like a "V".
- Fold one end in and down to the half way mark, leaving a rounded loop on the end.
- Push the center part of the loop down, creating 2 little parts of a hoof. Flatten the end and pinch the pipe cleaner together.
- Repeat on the other side so the pig has 2 legs to stand on.
- Figure out where the egg will sit on the pipe cleaner and then add a dot of hot glue on each leg.
- Place the egg onto the pipe cleaner legs and hold it in place until the glue is dry or until it stays in place.
Step 5: Make a tail and add final details
- Wind a pipe cleaner around a pencil or your little finger to make a spiral. Then cut it so the spiral is about 1-1/4 inches long.
- Add glue to the back of the egg, near the bottom, and attach the curly tail so it points out to one side.
- Use a paint pen or a regular black marker to draw eyes on the egg and nostrils on the snout.
- Your pig Easter egg is complete!
- Use our printable template and 5 more Easter eggs to create a whole group of farm animals!
Helpful Tips:
- Instead of paper, use craft feathers for the chick’s wings! You can also add a little tuft of feathers on its head.
- Add more texture to the Easter egg animals by using buttons for the snouts of the pig, horse, and cow.

What type of egg is best for making farm animal Easter eggs?
We made our farm animal Easter eggs using dyable faux eggs that we got at the dollar store and we found them great to work with! They’re lightweight, easy to paint, and you can keep them long term, since they won’t go bad like a real egg.
You can also use real hard boiled eggs, paper eggs, or wooden Easter eggs. Or you can make an animal from a blown out egg shell — though they’re a lot more delicate, so they’re not great if you plan for kids to play with them. (Also, don’t eat the hardboiled eggs if you’re using acrylic paint on them.)
Do I have to use cardstock on these farm animal Easter eggs?
We used cardstock to decorate our animal Easter eggs mostly because it’s what we had on hand. But you can also cut out the template pieces from felt, construction paper, or craft foam.
Do I have to use a paint pen on these Easter egg farm animals?
If you don’t have a paint pen you can also use a regular marker or a gel pen to add details onto your Easter egg animals. Or if you’re comfortable with your painting skills you can also use acrylic paint and a fine tipped paintbrush to create the eyes and nostrils on the eggs.
What other Easter egg animals can I make?
Try decorating your Easter egg like a a goat, goose, cat, or dog! We bet you can use some of the pieces from our free template to create these other adorable animals!
Use faux eggs and keep the Easter egg animals out year round. They’re lots of fun for pretend play, storytime, or even a farm lesson at school. You can even make a play red barn to go along with your eggs!
