How to Make a Fruit of the Spirit Craft
Equipment:
Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Colour the fruit templates
- Print our fruit of the Spirit templates on white paper or cardstock. You can find the download link in the materials list with more details below the tutorial.
- Colour the word inside of the fruit. You can use one colour for all the fruit names (we used black), or personalize it for each fruit.
- Then colour the details of the fruit. We used crayon for ours, but colored pencils or markers will also work.
- Then cut out the fruit carefully, getting as close to the outline as possible.
- Repeat, colouring all of the fruit. We’ve included 2 fruit options for “Joy”, so you can choose your favourite.
Step 3: Cut and paint paper plates
- To make the fruit basket we’re using 2 uncoated paper plates — the kind with a fluted edge that curves up.
- Cut one of the paper plates in half. These will form the sides of the basket.
- Paint the bottom of the plate halves with brown acrylic paint.
- Once the paint is dry (it should happen fairly quickly), flip the plate halves over and paint down a couple of inches from the flat edge. This will ensure that you don’t see any unpainted parts of the fruit basket.
- Cut off the fluted rim from another plate. Then remove about 1/3, leaving the longer section to be the basket handle.
- Paint both sides of the handle brown as well.
Step 4: Put the fruit basket together
- Add a bit of hot glue to the top inside corner of one basket half.(Tacky glue will also work.)
- Place one end of the handle into the glue. Then repeat on the other side.
- Add a line of hot glue around the curved outside of the basket half.
- Then connect the other half of the basket into the glue, lining up the edges carefully. You can do this a bit at a time to make it easier, if you’d like.
Step 5: Place the fruit in the basket
- Set the fruit into the paper plate basket. You can place them fully inside or set them partially in so you can read the fruit names.
- Your fruit of the Spirit craft is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- Use your favourite colouring supplies: We used crayons to colour our fruit, but markers and coloured pencils work just as well. Kids can also mix and match supplies to make each fruit their own.
- Print the fruit on cardstock: Cardstock makes the pieces sturdier, so they’re easier for kids to cut out and tuck into the basket without bending, wrinkling, or tearing.

What type of paper plate should I use for the fruit basket?
An inexpensive, uncoated paper plate works best for this craft. We used large 9-inch paper plates — the thin, flexible kind that might not be your first choice for holding dinner, but are perfect for crafts because they’re lightweight and easy to cut.
Avoid coated or glossy plates if possible, since paint and glue may not stick as well.

What glue is best for this Fruit of the Spirit craft?
We used a low-temperature hot glue gun because it holds the paper plate pieces together quickly without needing much drying time.
If you don’t want kids using hot glue, a glue stick or tacky craft glue will also work. Just give liquid glue enough time to dry before filling the basket with the fruit pieces.
What are the fruits of the Spirit?
The nine fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
They’re qualities that the Bible teaches can grow in us as the Holy Spirit works in our lives. For kids, you can explain them as ways we can show God’s love through how we think, speak, and treat other people — like choosing kindness, being patient, showing love, and practicing self-control.

What do the fruit of the Spirit printables represent?
We chose each fruit purposefully to represent the fruits of the Holy Spirit:
- Love is a strawberry, heart-shaped and sweet.
- Joy is a lemon or an orange, bright citrus fruits in cheerful colours.
- Peace is a blueberry, small and gentle.
- Patience is a watermelon, which takes time to grow and ripen.
- Kindness is a peach, sweet and perfectly soft when ready to eat.
- Goodness is an apple, the classic “good for you” fruit, often representing the fruit of knowledge.
- Faithfulness is a bunch of grapes, which grow together in clusters and are used in the Bible to represent abundance and obedience to Christ.
- Gentleness is a pear, a soft, rounded shape in a gentle colour.
- Self-control is a banana, an easy to colour kid-friendly fruit that represents “peeling back” impulses.

This Fruit of the Spirit craft is a sweet way to turn a Bible lesson into something kids can colour, build, and take home with them. Once the basket is filled, it becomes a cheerful reminder of the qualities they’re learning about — and an easy craft to revisit whenever you’re teaching about living with love, kindness, patience, and more.
