Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Paint a base coat
- Paint a rock with a base coat of white paint. This will make your coloured paint show up better, allowing you to do less coats. Allow to dry.
- Choose a base colour for your rock (orange, for us) and paint over top of the white. Again, allow to dry.
- Add another coat of orange paint to the rock. Allow to dry for longer this time so that the paint is completely dry. (We waited 1 hour, to be safe.)
Step 3: Add details with paint markers
- Use a paint pen to add details to the rock. Start by making an outline of your shape. You can also use pencil to create a guideline, if you’d like. But keep in mind that it’s hard to fully erase pencil from the painted surface.
- Fill the shape in with the paint marker. If your paint markers have a brush tip, this will provide the best coverage.Allow to dry for a few minutes and add a second coat, if necessary (usually only lighter colours need this).
- Optional: Use a different colour of paint marker and add a thick border around your shape.
- Then decorate the rock more. Here we added fun details around the edge of the rock.
- Finally, once the paint marker is totally dry, write a fun pun/Father’s Day message on the rock. (Keep reading below for some ideas.)
- Your “My Dad rocks” paperweight is complete!
- Personalize your Dad painted rocks to fit the special father figure in your life. Use his favourite colours, or reference his hobbies and interests.Keep reading below for some fun ideas!
Helpful Tips:
- Use a white base coat: Painting your rock white first will help your coloured paint go on more evenly, and you’ll need fewer coats to achieve good coverage.
- Choose the right rocks: Flat river rocks or Mexican beach pebbles work best for rock painting. For the best price, check your local landscape supply companies, or even a hardware store or garden center, instead of craft stores.

What type of paint works best for this rock painting craft?
Acrylic paint is the best choice for rock painting, and it’s definitely better to use higher-quality paint rather than dollar store brands. Cheaper paints often need many more coats and take a lot longer to dry properly.
We also love paint pens for painted rocks. They’re a great way to add fine details without worrying about paintbrush control. A lot of times they offer better coverage, too!
We recommend using acrylic paint for the base colour of the rock and adding any drawings or words with the paint markers.

Once your painted rocks are dry, they’re ready to be gifted as a special Father’s Day surprise. Thanks to their size and weight these colourful creations double perfectly as rock paperweights: something Dad can proudly put on display.
These DIY painted stones are a simple and meaningful way to show just how much Dad rocks. And handmade gifts like this are a wonderful reminder that it’s not about how much you spend: it’s about the love, creativity, and personal touch you put into it. So gather your rocks, grab your paint, and have fun making something Dad will treasure for years to come!
