Paint rocks and turn them into a fun Father’s Day gift with this "My Dad Rocks" craft! These DIY painted rock paperweights are easy to customize and make a meaningful, handmade present Dad will love.
Paint a rock with a base coat of white paint. This will make your coloured paint show up better, allowing you to do less coats. Allow to dry.
Choose a base colour for your rock (orange, for us) and paint over top of the white. Again, allow to dry.
Add another coat of orange paint to the rock. Allow to dry for longer this time so that the paint is completely dry. (We waited 1 hour, to be safe.)
Step 3: Add details with paint markers
Use a paint pen to add details to the rock. Start by making an outline of your shape. You can also use pencil to create a guideline, if you'd like. But keep in mind that it's hard to fully erase pencil from the painted surface.
Fill the shape in with the paint marker. If your paint markers have a brush tip, this will provide the best coverage.Allow to dry for a few minutes and add a second coat, if necessary (usually only lighter colours need this).
Optional: Use a different colour of paint marker and add a thick border around your shape.
Then decorate the rock more. Here we added fun details around the edge of the rock.
Finally, once the paint marker is totally dry, write a fun pun/Father's Day message on the rock. (Keep reading below for some ideas.)
