Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Make the egg carton tea cup
- Cut an egg cup section out of an egg carton.
- Then cut the cup section in half (so you have one side and one open half). Trim around the top so it’s nice and neat.
- Paint the egg carton piece with acrylic paint, both inside and out. This will be your tea cup.Allow to dry.
- Fold a 6 inch pipe cleaner in half and then twist the strands together.
- Curve the twisted pipe cleaner so the center section is rounded.
- Glue one part of the pipe cleaner inside the “cup” on the side. Connect the other end to the bottom side, creating the cup’s handle.Hold the pipe cleaner until the hot glue has hardened and the handle will stay in place on its own.
Step 3: Make and decorate the card
- Make a card by cutting an 8-1/2 by 11 inch piece of cardstock in half. Fold one of these halves in half again to create your greeting card.
- Cut a piece of coloured cardstock to fit on the front of your card with a bit of a white border showing. (We cut ours to 3-1/2 by 5 inches.)Attach the cardstock to the front of the card with glue tape.
- Add a thin line of hot glue to the back of the tea cup.
- Place the tea cup in the center of the card.
- Cut a couple faux flowers from their greenery, so the back is relatively flat, and glue them to the card.
Step 4: Write a message and add a tea bag
- Write your message inside the card with marker. You can pen a nice note to Mom or add a fun tea pun like we did here (keep reading below for some fun phrase ideas).
- Close the card and set a tea bag inside the cup.
- Your tea cup Mother’s Day card is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- If you don’t want to use a glue gun, tacky glue will also provide a strong hold for the tea cup and flowers.
- Customize the tea cup to match Mom’s style! Paint the egg carton in her favourite colour and decorate it with flowers or patterns she loves. Personal touches like these make the card even more special and meaningful!
- Pre-paint the egg carton cups ahead of time if you’re doing this craft with a group of kids. This will save time and make the assembly process much easier (and less messy!).

How can I decorate the egg carton tea cup card if I don’t have flowers?
No flowers? No problem! Here are some fun alternatives:
- Add rhinestones as sparkly “steam” coming from the tea cup, or as a border around the card.
- Use floral or pastel washi tape to make a little “table” under the tea cup.
- Glue on a piece of doily or lace trim below the tea cup for a delicate touch.
- Try buttons for decoration! They make great flower centers or even pretend tea bubbles.
- Draw steam swirls or hearts above the cup for a cute, handmade feel.
- Use alphabet stickers to spell out “MOM,” “LOVE,” or “TEA TIME” for an extra finishing touch.

What paper do I need to make this tea cup Mother’s Day card?
We used regular white cardstock cut in half and then folded to make our card base. The cardstock we used is 65 lb weight, which works well, but a heavier cardstock will make an even sturdier card.
We used the same type of cardstock in colour to create a layered look for the card. Textured scrapbooking paper will also work well, and adds a nice finish.

This sweet and simple craft is a meaningful way to show Mom just how much she means to you. Made with love and a few everyday materials, this tea bag Mother’s Day card is a beautiful reminder that the best gifts don’t have to come from a store.
Whether it’s tucked into a bouquet, slipped into a gift bag, or given all on its own, this DIY tea cup card is sure to be something Mom will treasure.
