Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Make the rose and leaf stamps
- Place a sponge cloth with the longest part facing you. Roll it up until 1/2 inch is left unrolled.
- Then roll the cloth the other way. Try to keep the unrolled edge even, so that your stamp will transfer well.
- Secure the bundle with a rubber band.
- You should now see a rose shape!
- Draw a leaf shape on a regular kitchen sponge with marker or pen.
- Cut out the leaf shape. It doesn’t matter if it’s perfectly shaped, as long as the top (the part you’re going to stamp) is neat.
Step 3: Prepare the paint and card
- Add paint colours to a paper plate or palette. We chose red for the roses, a nice shade of green for the leaves, and pink for the vase.
- For the card, fold a piece of cardstock in half. We used pink paper for this card, but any colour will do!
Step 4: Stamp roses on the card
- Dip the sponge rose into the red paint (or your flower colour of choice). Roll the stamp from side to side to make sure all parts of the rose are covered.
- First, stamp the rose on a scrap piece of paper. This will get rid of excess paint. Generally you’ll want to stamp the rose 2 to 3 times (depending how much paint is on it) before adding it to the card.
- Once you feel the excess paint is off the stamp, stamp it down onto the card. We started in the middle of the bouquet here, but you can stamp in other areas too — just try to plan how many flowers you want to add and leave space for them.
- Repeat, adding more flowers to the front of the card. You can generally get 2 nice transfers on the card before adding more paint to the stamp.
Step 5: Add leaves and a vase
- Next, dip the leaf sponge into the green paint. Again, use the scrap paper to remove the excess paint.
- Press the leaf stamp onto the card, along the edge of the rose bouquet.
- Repeat, adding more leaves to the card.
- Use the pink paint (or another colour) and a paintbrush to add a vase below the rose bundle. Allow to dry.(You can also paint stems for the roses or cut a vase shape from paper and glue it on.)
Step 6: Write a message inside your homemade card
- Write your Mother’s Day message or other greeting inside the card.
- Your sponge printed rose card is complete!
- Have fun making colourful DIY rose stamp cards for all the special people in your life!
Helpful Tips:
- Press and roll for full coverage: When stamping your roses, press down firmly and gently roll the stamp a little to ensure all parts touch the paper. If you notice any blank spots, don’t worry! You can carefully re-align the stamp, press again, and even add a bit more paint if needed.
- Layer colours for a realistic rose effect: To create a more textured, natural look, try stamping with different shades of pink or red. Instead of stamping in the exact same spot, shift the second stamp slightly off-center for a layered, dimensional effect.

What sponges do I need to make rose stamp cards?
For the roses a soft, absorbent cellulose sponge cloth is ideal. And it works best straight out of the package. Once washed, it becomes rigid and won’t roll as easily.
If you’ve already washed your sponge cloth, you can wet it slightly to regain flexibility, but keep in mind that dampness may affect the way the paint transfers.
For the leaves, a soft cellulose kitchen sponge works perfectly! It holds paint well and creates crisp leaf shapes.

How do I apply paint to the sponge rose stamps?
Dipping the sponge stamp into paint is a fun and easy method that works well. But be sure to blot off excess paint on scrap paper before stamping to avoid a thick, messy print.
You can also use a paintbrush to apply paint to the stamp. It gives you more control over how much paint is added, and is a great option if you want to create multi-coloured roses (for example, blending red and pink for a soft gradient effect).

What paint works best for making sponge printed rose cards?
We like to use acrylic craft paint for most of our art projects. It’s inexpensive, vibrant, and widely available.
But tempera paint is also a great choice (especially for younger kids) since it’s washable and easy to clean up.
How can I keep sponge painting low-mess?
Crafting with paint can get messy, but there are a few easy ways to keep things under control:
- Wear a smock, apron, or old play clothes.
- Protect your table with a plastic tablecloth or drop cloth.
- Keep baby wipes or damp paper towels nearby for quick cleanup.
- Have a spare plate or dish available and set paint covered sponges in there immediately after use.

Get ready to brighten someone’s day with a sponge printed rose card! You can mix and match colours to make each card unique. Try classic red roses on white cardstock for a timeless look, soft pink roses on pastel paper for a sweet and delicate touch, or even bold purples and blues for a fun modern twist!
And don’t forget to personalize your DIY card with a handwritten message inside. After all, it’s the little details that make it extra special! Whether you’re making a card for Mom, your Valentine, or just to spread some love, this simple sponge stamping technique creates a beautiful keepsake that’s sure to be cherished.
