Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Fold and glue the rose petals
- Cut a 3 inch piece of pink ribbon and set it down with the long edge towards you.
- Fold the top right corner down to the bottom edge.
- Add a small dot of hot glue under the folded layer.
- Press the folded ribbon down into the glue and hold it until it stays in place.
- Repeat the same fold on the left and glue it down as well.
- Add a small dot of glue near the bottom of the ribbon, close to the center right.
- Fold the right corner in to the center and glue it down. Then repeat, folding the left corner in to the center and gluing it down.
- Repeat, making 9 more petals (10 total).
Step 3: Glue the petals together
- Add glue to the bottom right triangle area of one of the petals.
- Place the left side of a second petal into the glue, lining up the bottom edges. The left side of the second petal should be at the middle of the first petal.
- Continue this pattern, adding the remaining petals one by one. The line of petals will naturally curve.
Step 4: Wrap a wire stem in green ribbon
- Cut an 8 inch piece of wire and use needle nose pliers to create a hook/curve at one end.
- Cut an 8 inch length of green ribbon.
- Place the ribbon under the wire at an angle, near the top. Add glue to the ribbon.
- Leave the hook uncovered and roll the ribbon tightly around the wire, gluing it into place to secure it.
Step 5: Roll the petals around the stem
- Flip the petals over so that the folded side is on the bottom. Add a dot of glue to the bottom right of the rightmost petal.
- Place the hook of the wrapped wire into the glue.
- Begin rolling the petals around the wire.
- Continue wrapping the petals around each other, securing them in place with a small dot of glue every second petal.
- Add a final dot of glue to secure the end of the petal roll.
Step 6: Attach greenery to the bottom of the rose
- Cut 3 pieces of green ribbon 3 inches long.
- Cut the short ends of the ribbon to a point in the center.
- Fold the ribbon piece in half and cut a small slit in the center.Repeat for the other 2 ribbon pieces.
- Slide the bottom of the wire stem through the slit in one of the ribbon pieces, bringing it up to the top, below the rose.Repeat the other 2 pieces of ribbon, arranging them so that they're sticking out at different angles.
- Add a dot of glue to one of the ribbon pieces.
- Push the ribbon up, connecting it to the side of the rose.Repeat with the rest of the ribbon ends.
Step 7: Attach a leaf to the stem
- Cut another 3 inch length of green ribbon. Cut from the ends on an angle, creating a parallelogram shaped leaf for the rose.
- Add a dot of glue to one of the points of the leaf.
- Attach the leaf to the stem, about half way down.
- Your ribbon rose is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- Make a bouquet of ribbon roses and tie a ribbon around the stems before adding a ribbon bow to the bundle.
- You can also wrap the wire in floral tape to create the rose’s stem.
What size ribbon rose does this make?
We used 1-1/2 inch wide ribbon, and our ribbon roses are about 2-1/4 inches in diameter, and between 1-1/2 and 2 inches tall (or 8-1/2 to 9 inches tall with the stem). The exact size of the flower will depend on how tightly you roll the ribbon.
Can I make different sizes of ribbon roses?
To create different sizes of DIY roses use different widths of ribbon. For each petal, cut the length of ribbon to be double the width (eg. our petals are made from ribbon pieces 3 inches long because the ribbon width is 1-1/2 inches).
Therefore, thicker ribbon will require longer pieces of ribbon for each petal, while thinner ribbon can use shorter pieces. You can also create a different size of flower by adding or subtracting from the number of petals.
What type of ribbon is best for a ribbon rose?
We suggest using satin or grosgrain ribbon to make your ribbon rose. Satin ribbon will create a softer rose with a shiny finish. Grosgrain ribbon gives you a stiffer feeling rose, with a matte, textured look.
We don’t recommend using wired ribbon to make ribbon roses. Wire ribbon will fold easily, but the petals won’t look as natural.
How can I use this ribbon rose?
These ribbon roses make a great homemade gift, and they look so cute on display in a vase!
If you leave off the stem there are so many possibilities for what you can do with your DIY flower. Use the ribbon rose as a gift topper or shoe clip. Decorate a hat with it or create a floral fridge magnet. You can also make a hair accessory by gluing the rose to a barrette or headband.
