How to Make a Pom Pom Christmas Tree
Materials:
- Beige cardstock (or other colour to match pom poms)
- Beige pom poms (various sizes)
- Cream pom poms (various sizes)
Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Make the cone base
- Trace a plate or something else round onto cardstock. Cut out the circle.(Our circle is 8-1/2 inches across, but the exact size doesn’t matter.)
- Fold the circle in half and cut it down the middle, creating 2 equal pieces. You’ll only need 1 half to make your pom pom Christmas tree.
- Roll the cardstock around itself to create a cone.
- Secure the edge of the cone with hot glue or tape.
Step 3: Add pom poms to the cone
- Gather a bunch of pom poms in a variety of sizes and shades. Here we’re making a neutral Christmas tree with beige and cream shades, but you can choose whatever colour you’d like, or even make a multi-coloured tree!
- Begin by adding hot glue to a small section at the bottom of the tree. You’ll want to work in small areas, because the glue dries really quickly.
- Place a pom pom into the glue so it meets the bottom of the cone.
- Add more glue to the cone and press pom poms into place. Push them so they’re snug together, hiding the cardstock base.
- Repeat all the way around the cone. Finish with a smaller pom pom on top, so it covers the tip of the cone.
- Your pom pom Christmas tree is complete!

- Change the vibe: Using darker or neutral colours of pom poms makes this tree a classy decoration for the home, while using brighter rainbow pom poms make this a fun kids craft!
- Make a whole forest: These pom pom trees look even better in groups. Create a forest of trees in different sizes and a mix of colours for a fun and festive display on your mantel or Christmas table.

What size circle do I need to make a pom pom Christmas tree?
In the tutorial above, we traced a circle approximately 8-1/2 inches across. This, when cut in half, makes a tree about 5 inches tall and 2-1/2 inches across at the bottom.
From a regular sheet of paper, this is around the largest tree you can make using the circle method. However, you can also trace a larger half circle or use our pipe cleaner tree cone template.
What else can I use for the base of my pom pom tree?
If you don’t want to make your own cone, you can also buy Styrofoam cones or paper mache cones. This allows you to make taller tree decorations. Then simply glue your pom poms to these pre-made cones.

What size of pom poms do I need to make this Christmas tree craft?
Mixing different sizes of pom poms gives your tree the best look. We used a number of different pom poms, ranging from 5mm all the way up to 30mm.
You can buy separate bags of pom poms to get different sizes, or choose a large assorted pack that includes a variety of sizes.

What colours make the best pom pom tree?
You can make your pom pom tree in any colour combination you like!
- Choose a neutral tree (in cream, beige, and soft ivory) for an elegant look.
- Go with dark red hues for a classy holiday theme.
- Try shades of green for a classic Christmas look.
- A blue tree makes a beautiful winter decoration.
- Or have fun with multi-coloured pom poms. Think bright rainbow shades, soft pastels, or even vivid neon colours!
