How to Make a Penguin Spoon Craft
Materials:
- Free Printable Penguin Spoon Template
- Cardstock (black, orange, yellow)
- Glue tape
- Googly eyes (8mm)
- Pipe cleaner (colour of choice)
- Pom poms (10mm, to match pipe cleaner)
Equipment:
Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Make the penguin body
- Use our printable template to cut out the shapes from cardstock. Use black for the penguin body, orange for the beak, and yellow for the feet.
- Gently fold the penguin, without creasing it too much, and cut on the line indicated on the template.
- Then slide the spoon through the hole you just cut. The rounded back of the spoon should be facing out.
Step 3: Add details to the penguin
- Add small dots of glue tape at the bottom of the penguin, on either side of the spoon, for the feet.(Note: We found the glue taped feet and beak fell off easily when playing with them — so we recommend using tacky glue or hot glue to attach them.)
- Then attach the cardstock feet horizontally into the glue tape.
- Fold the orange beak in half and add glue tape along the fold line.
- Place the beak so it’s just above the spoon and then attach the googly eyes above. Our googly eyes are self-adhesive, but tacky glue or hot glue will work for regular ones.
Step 4: Make earmuffs for your penguin (optional)
- To make earmuffs for your penguin, cut a piece of pipe cleaner about 2 inches long.
- Bend the pipe cleaner piece into a curve and add a dot of hot glue to either end.
- Set pom poms into the glue.
- Add a dot of glue to the back of each pom pom. Then place them on the penguin’s head.
- Your penguin spoon craft is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- Swap the earmuffs for a winter hat: If you don’t want to make earmuffs, you can cut a simple winter hat shape from cardstock and glue a pom pom on top. It’s an easy alternative and just as cute!
- Use a stronger glue for playtime: If kids will be playing with their penguin puppets a lot, consider using tacky glue or hot glue to attach the pieces (especially the googly eyes) so everything stays secure.

What type of spoon do I need to make this penguin craft?
A regular white plastic spoon works perfectly for this craft. You can also use cornstarch spoons, which look the same and are more eco-friendly.
If you can only find bamboo or wood spoons, just paint the bowl of the spoon white before adding the penguin pieces.

What’s the best material for making this spoon penguin?
You can make the penguin parts from cardstock, felt, or craft foam. All three of these materials will work well.
Cardstock is the easiest to cut, felt adds a soft texture (but is more floppy, unless you use stiff felt), while foam gives your penguin a bit more dimension.

These little penguin spoon puppets are such a fun way to bring a bit of winter cheer to your crafting time. Kids will love making them, playing with them, and using them in pretend play stories or classroom activities.
And if you happen to have extra plastic spoons on hand from takeout spots, this is a great way to turn them into something adorable instead of tossing them out. Have fun creating your own waddle of penguins!
