Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Fill the bottle with baby oil
- Fill a clean plastic travel-sized bottle with baby oil until it’s almost to the top. Leave a bit of space at the top.
Step 3: Add glitter
- Add your first type of glitter. We used star shaped glitter.
- Pour some of your next glitter type. We used heart shaped glitter.
- Add a couple more types of glitter to the bottle. We used pink heart outlines and pink chunky glitter.
- Add one more kind of glitter, if desired. Fill the bottle to the top with baby oil.
Step 4: Close the bottle
- Close the lid tightly. Optional: Glue the lid in place.
- Shake the bottle well to combine the glitters.
- Your DIY glitter jar is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- Some glitter types might bleed colour into the oil. Before making your glitter jar you may need to test a few different varieties to find ones that don’t do this.
- These DIY glitter jars are made using travel-sized shampoo bottles. If you use a TSA approved size, you should be able to bring it on an airplane with you as a calming distraction for kids (but airport security personnel will ultimately determine this).

What size of bottle do I need for my DIY glitter jar?
Our glitter jars are made in standard sized (3.4 ounce/100 milliliter) travel shampoo bottles that we bought at our local dollar store.
If you’re not planning to take it on a flight, you can use any size bottle you’d like. You’ll just need more (or less) baby oil and glitter for your glitter jar recipe, depending on the size.

What can I fill my calming glitter jar with if I don’t have baby oil?
We prefer using baby oil for our glitter jars, because it makes the glitter and shapes fall slowly. But there are a few different options you can use instead.
A couple tablespoons of glycerin mixed into water works well. And clear dish soap mixed with water is another great option.
We found using only water caused the glitter to clump up, so we suggest plain water only as a last resort, if you can’t get any of the other options.

Where can I find different types of glitter for my glitter jars?
You can find a variety of glitter types in your local shops. The dollar store likely has some different styles available for low prices, and craft stores sell a variety of glitter types too. (Hint: check the kid’s craft section for less expensive glitter!)
You can also buy glitter on Amazon or other online craft supply websites. Plus, keep an eye out for smaller sequins and seed beads that will work just as well in place of shaped glitter.

These DIY glitter jars are a delightful addition to any craft lineup! Whether you place them by a sunny windowsill, use them as a calming desk companion, or share them as a pocket-sized pick-me-up, they’re sure to bring a sparkle of joy anywhere.
