What is colloidal oatmeal?
Colloidal oatmeal is oats that have been ground into a very fine powder. It’s used in skincare products such as moisturizers, face masks, and bath soaks.
The reason why colloidal oatmeal is preferred to regular oatmeal is its versatility. The finely ground particles allow the oatmeal to mix better with water and other ingredients, creating a face mask with a smooth, creamy consistency.
Can I make colloidal oatmeal at home?
Yes, if you don’t want to buy colloidal oatmeal you can easily make it at home in a blender or food processor, like we did for our masks. It may not be quite as finely ground or consistent as the colloidal oatmeal you can buy at the store, but it works just as well.
To make colloidal oatmeal, simply add whole oats to your food processor and blend or pulse until they reach a finely ground, powder-like consistency. This can take a few minutes, depending on the blender you use.
Then store your colloidal oatmeal in an airtight container until needed for face masks, bath soaks, etc.
What are the benefits of the ingredients in this DIY face mask?
We love these face mask ingredients because they’re simple pantry items that you might already have at home. But beyond being recognizable items that most everyone has access to, they’re also incredibly beneficial for your skin!
Here’s what each of the ingredients help with:
Oatmeal:
Very soothing for the skin due to its moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties. It improves dryness by locking in moisture, is an antioxidant, and also gently exfoliates. Good for all skin types.
Honey:
Amazing for hydrating and soothing the skin, providing antioxidants. Its natural antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory properties also help promote wound healing. Honey is especially great for acne-prone or dry skin.
Greek yogurt:
High in lactic acid, which is also found in milk. It provides gentle exfoliation and moisturization. Yogurt also contains probiotics, which help to balance skin. Great for all skin types, especially dry or sensitive skin.
Regular yogurt also works, but Greek yogurt is thicker, making it easier to apply, and it contains more protein content.
Green Tea (Matcha):
High in antioxidants and has all kinds of benefits! It reduces redness and irritation, promotes collagen production, and helps to protect against UV damage. Particularly good for sensitive or aging skin.
Banana:
The high potassium and vitamin content of bananas helps to hydrate and nourish the skin. Bananas have antioxidant properties, and will improve the skin’s elasticity, promoting a healthy, glowing complexion.
How long does a DIY face mask last?
We recommend using a fresh face mask immediately. These homemade face masks have the best consistency if used right after mixing.
If needed, you can store the face masks in the refrigerator for a day or two. But DIY face masks made with perishable items have a very short shelf life and can grow bacteria if they sit at room temperature for too long.
So we definitely suggest using your DIY face masks right away!
What other ingredients can be used to make a DIY face mask?
There are lots of other simple ingredients that are great for your skin. Try adding some of these into a face mask:
- Aloe: Very moisturizing and soothing. Good antioxidant protection for all skin types, especially dry or sensitive skin.
- Avocado: High in healthy fats, vitamins, and antioxidants. Moisturizes and protects the skin, promoting a healthy complexion.
- Coconut Oil: Protects the skin barrier and has hydrating properties. Its fatty acids and antioxidants will sooth and moisturize dry or irritated skin.
- Cucumber: A refreshing ingredient with a high water content, great for sensitive skin. Reduces inflammation and evens out your skin tone.
- Egg Whites: A protein-rich ingredient that will tighten and tone the skin. Will minimize the appearance of pores and absorb excess oil.
- Olive Oil: Provides deep hydration with its healthy fats, reducing wrinkles and fine lines. Olive oil is not good for acne prone skin, unless it’s diluted.
- Rose Water: Hydrates and soothes irritation, reducing redness with its anti-inflammatory properties. Refreshing and revitalizing for all skin types.
