Sometimes I forget how amazing my crockpot is! I really don’t use it enough, and it’s such a great tool for making all kinds of yummy recipes with very little effort.
This slow cooker buffalo chicken dip recipe is super easy – and you know I LOVE easy recipes. It only takes a few minutes to put together all of the ingredients. Set on the crockpot and you’re free to move on to the next task on your to-do list!
This creamy dip is cheesy, tangy and has a bit of a kick!
When I was at the store I almost bought “hot” buffalo sauce. I’m glad I noticed the label, because the “original” buffalo sauce was plenty spicy for me. But if you like your food hot and spicy, be bold and grab the bottle that says “hot” for a more fiery flavour.

How to Make Crockpot Buffalo Chicken Dip:
The full printable recipe is at the end of this post, but here’s a list of what you’ll need:
- Shredded chicken
- Cream cheese
- Buffalo sauce
- Ranch dressing
- Cheddar cheese
I recommend using a small, dip-sized crock pot to make your slow cooker buffalo chicken dip. The crockpot I used was 2 quarts (8 cups). And it fit the ingredients pretty much perfectly!
We used Frank’s Red Hot Buffalo Wings Sauce “Original” (as opposed to “Hot”). There’s a few different brands on the grocery store shelves that you can try – just make sure the bottle you choose says “Buffalo” on it somewhere. I found mine in the barbecue sauce section.
Once all the ingredients have been added to the crock pot, give everything a good stir, and mix it all together as best you can. It really doesn’t mix easily at this point, but do your best to mix things up a little bit.
Place the lid on and set the slow cooker to LOW heat for 3-4 hours.
Stir the dip every hour or so, making sure your cheeses are melting and everything is mixing together.
You’ll know this dip is finished cooking when the cheddar cheese is fully melted and the cream cheese is smooth, and no longer chunky.
What kind of chicken can you use in buffalo chicken dip?
We like to make our crockpot buffalo chicken dip with real chicken. We used freshly cooked chicken breasts for the dip you see in the photos. Two good sized cooked chicken breasts made almost exactly 3 cups of cooked, shredded chicken.
This is also a great recipe for leftover chicken or rotisserie chicken. You can also use canned chicken if you’re in a pinch. I definitely prefer real chicken, but canned chicken still tastes good – especially if you’re in a hurry!
How to shred chicken breasts:
Season the chicken breasts with salt, and place them in a baking dish. Then add about 1/2 cup of water to the baking dish and cover it with aluminum foil. Cook the chicken breasts at 350F until they’re completely cooked through. I cooked mine for 60 minutes – which is a little on the long side – because I’m notoriously worried about under cooked chicken.
As soon as the chicken breasts come out of the oven, place just the chicken (not the water) in a mixing bowl, and use a hand mixer to shred the chicken. The chicken has to be warm for this to work.
Yep, you heard me, a hand mixer! Seriously, how did I not know this little trick earlier!? Set the mixer on low to medium-low speed and you get perfectly shredded chicken! You can also pull it apart with 2 forks if you don’t have a mixer.
What do you serve with this easy crockpot buffalo chicken dip?
There’s so many options! You can serve it with tortilla chips/nachos (my personal favourite), pita chips, crackers (Ritz or saltine crackers) or vegetables. You could even serve it with Doritos for an extra flavour kick.
Cut up carrot and celery sticks make a great lower calorie, gluten free option!
Can you make crockpot buffalo chicken dip in advance?
Yes! If you’re making it in advance, combine all the ingredients in a small pot over medium low heat on the stove top until everything is melted and combined. Then refrigerate the dip, covered, for up to 2 days. When you’re ready to serve it, pour the dip into the crockpot and set it on low heat for at least 2 hours or until it’s hot and bubbly.
How long does it last?
After 4 hours of cooking in the crockpot, you can continue to leave the crock pot on low heat for another 2 to 3 hours, while you’re serving it. I like to set the crock pot on the counter and leave the crackers and everything beside it so it stays warm during the whole party.
If this delicious appetizer doesn’t completely disappear, you can store the leftovers in the refrigerator, in a covered container for up to 3 days. Reheat the leftovers it in the microwave or in a small pan on the stovetop. It still tastes great when it’s reheated!
