Here’s What You’ll Need:
-
- Shredded chicken
- Cream cheese
- Buffalo sauce
- Ranch dressing
- Cheddar cheese
We used Frank’s Red Hot Buffalo Wings Sauce “Original” (as opposed to “Hot”). There’s a few different brands on the grocery store shelves that you can try – just make sure the bottle you choose says “Buffalo” on it somewhere. I found mine in the barbecue sauce section.
What kind of chicken can you use in buffalo chicken dip?
I recommend making your crockpot buffalo chicken dip with real chicken. I used freshly cooked chicken breasts for the dip you see in the photos. Two good sized cooked chicken breasts made almost exactly 3 cups of cooked, shredded chicken.
This is also a great recipe for leftover chicken or rotisserie chicken. You can also use canned chicken if you’re in a pinch (it won’t taste as good as real chicken but it will still work).
What do you serve with this easy crockpot buffalo chicken dip?
You can serve it with tortilla chips/nachos (my personal favourite), pita chips, crackers (Ritz or saltine crackers) or vegetables. You could even serve it with Doritos for an extra flavour kick.
Cut up carrot and celery sticks make a great lower calorie, gluten free option.
Can you make crockpot buffalo chicken dip in advance?
Yes! If you’re making it in advance, combine all the ingredients in a small pot over medium low heat on the stove top until everything is melted and combined. Then refrigerate the dip, covered, for up to 2 days. When you’re ready to serve it, pour the dip into the crockpot and set it on low heat for at least 2 hours or until it’s hot and bubbly.
Crockpot Buffalo Chicken Dip Recipe
I recommend using a small, dip-sized crock pot to make your chicken dip. The crockpot I used was 2 quarts (8 cups). And it fit the ingredients pretty much perfectly!
When I was at the store I almost bought “hot” buffalo sauce. I’m glad I noticed the label, because the “original” buffalo sauce was plenty spicy for me. If you like your food hot and spicy, be bold and grab the bottle that says “hot” for a more fiery flavour.

- 1/2 cup buffalo sauce (such as Frank's)
- 3/4 cup ranch dressing
- 1-1/2 cups cheddar cheese grated

- Add all of the ingredients into a 2 quart crockpot. Stir as best you can to combine the ingredients slightly.
- Set the crockpot to LOW heat and allow it to cook for about 3-4 hours, or until everything is completely melted and combined.
- Stir the ingredients every hour.
- The dip is ready when the cheddar cheese is completely melted and you can't see any more chunks of cream cheese when you stir.
- Serve warm with tortilla chips, crackers or veggies!

How to shred chicken breasts:
Season the chicken breasts with salt, and place them in a baking dish. Then add about 1/2 cup of water to the baking dish and cover it with aluminum foil. Cook the chicken breasts at 350F until they’re completely cooked through. I cooked mine for 60 minutes – which is a little on the long side – because I’m notoriously worried about under cooked chicken.
As soon as the chicken breasts come out of the oven, place just the chicken (not the water) in a mixing bowl, and use a hand mixer to shred the chicken. The chicken has to be warm for this to work.
Yep, you heard me, a hand mixer! Seriously, how did I not know this little trick earlier!? Set the mixer on low to medium-low speed and you get perfectly shredded chicken! You can also pull it apart with 2 forks if you don’t have a mixer.
This recipe for crockpot buffalo chicken dip made with real chicken is SO GOOD and it’s so easy to make! With only 5 simple ingredients, you can leave it in the crockpot and it will be ready when you need it. This is such an easy appetizer recipe and a delicious recipe for game day. Served with nachos, crackers or veggies, it’s a perfect Superbowl snack… or anytime party snack!
