Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Make the tape heart
- Fold a wide piece of masking tape or painter’s tape in half with the non-stick sides facing each other.
- Cut a 1/2 heart shape, with the center of the heart along the fold. You can also draw a heart while the tape is on the roll and cut that instead.
- Unfold and attach the tape heart to the side of a clean mason jar. Press it down well so it’s smooth against the glass.
Step 3: Add glitter
- Use a paintbrush to add a generous coat of white school glue to the outside of the jar. Hold the jar with your non-dominant hand inside the jar and turn it by pressing against the bottom.
- Add your first colour of glitter all along the bottom of the jar while holding it sideways. This will give you an intense colour block at the bottom.
- Add more of the same colour of glitter, going slightly further up the jar.Hold the jar on an angle with the bottom up so gravity will help spread the glitter. Continue until close to half of the jar is covered.
- Add a different colour of glitter or a different shade of the same colour to the top of the jar. Hold the jar sideways again like you did for the bottom half of the jar.
- Continue adding the second colour of glitter, tilting the jar down as you work towards the middle.
- Repeat until the jar is completely covered. Allow to dry.
Step 4: Seal the glitter (optional)
- Once the glue is completely dry, add a coat of Glossy Mod Podge on top of the glitter. Allow the Mod Podge to dry. This is optional but we strongly recommend it to keep the glitter from “shedding” off the jar.
Step 5: Remove the tape
- Once the Mod Podge is completely dry, carefully remove the masking tape.
- Your glitter mason jar is complete!
- Make more glitter mason jars in different colours, add tealights, and enjoy!
Helpful Tips:
- Try not to glue on top of the masking tape. If you do, make sure to score the glue along the edges of the masking tape before removing the tape. Otherwise, glue and glitter from outside of the masked area may be removed with the tape.
- If you make a mistake and need to start over, the glue and glitter can easily be removed from the jar. Simply wash your jar with hot water and use a brush to scrub the glue and glitter away.
Do I have to use fine glitter for my heart mason jar?
We used extra fine glitter, but larger glitter, including chunky glitter, will also work. You can even try using a glow-in-the-dark glitter or some fun glitter shapes!
How else can I decorate my glitter mason jar craft besides ombre?
Using a single colour can be very pretty too. Or if you want to make a more complicated design, you can use masking tape or painter’s tape to block a design on your jar.
Once you’ve covered the non-taped area with glue and glitter, let it dry. Then remove the tape and add glue and a different colour of glitter to the new areas, if you’d like.
Can I put a real tea light in my glitter mason jar?
Yes, it’s safe to add a real tea light candle into your jars, or you can use a battery operated tea light candle.
