Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Print the free templates
- Print our free groundhog pop-up craft templates on cardstock. We printed our coloured-in groundhog on white cardstock and the base on green, but you can also print the black and white versions and colour them in yourself!
- Cut the green template. The top part will be the base of the craft. The smaller piece will be the grass.
Step 3: Make the grass
- Fold the smaller piece in half lengthwise. Cut a pointed fringe on the straight edge (without the “v”) to look like blades of grass.
- Fold the grass on the dotted line.
- Unfold and add glue tape to the thin part (with the “v”).
- Attach the grass to the base along the front line.
Step 4: Add the groundhog
- Cut around the groundhog template.
- Fold the den opening (the dirt mound) along the dotted line, then fold in half.
- Add glue tape to the white section of the den opening. Attach it to the base at the middle line.
- Fold along the dotted line on the bottom of the groundhog. Fold the groundhog in half.
- Add glue tape to the white section on the groundhog. Attach it to the base at the back line.
- Fold the base in half. Make sure the grass goes down as you fold the paper.
- Open the paper to see the groundhog pop up!Your groundhog pop-up craft is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- We also have templates that are not coloured, so you can print and colour your own!
- White glue, tacky glue, or a glue stick can be used instead of glue tape. We prefer glue tape because it’s less messy and was the perfect width for the tabs on our pop-up!

What type of paper is best for this Groundhog Day pop up craft?
Cardstock is the best option because it’s both sturdy and able to be printed on by a standard home printer. If you don’t have cardstock, you can print our template on regular printer paper and trace it onto construction paper.
You can also try using regular printer paper, but it may not be sturdy enough for a good pop-up effect.
Can I still make a pop up groundhog craft if I only have white cardstock?
Absolutely! Just print both the templates on white cardstock. Then you can trace the base template onto green construction paper, or colour it in with markers, coloured pencils, or crayons.
What if my glue isn’t holding the groundhog pop up enough?
If your Groundhog Day templates pop right off the page, you can place a small strip of clear scotch tape to connect the tab to the base. It shouldn’t be visible from the front and will provide extra hold to the pop up elements!
