- Cut out the shapes. Depending on what size you choose you can fit between 1 and 3 templates per page.
- Add loops of painter’s tape to the back of one shape. You want it to be secure, so that you can draw around it without the paper lifting. This might mean creating thinner loops on things like spider legs or cat tails.
- Place the template on a black piece of paper, smoothing it down so it sticks well. Repeat with the rest of the shapes. You can also cut out inside details, like the jack-o-lantern face, if you’d like.
Step 3: Add colour around the templates
- Use soft pastel to colour from the edge of the template onto the black paper, pressing firmly and extending the colour out at least 1/4 inch.
- Repeat with the rest of the shapes, using different colours. You can also use 2 or 3 colours on one template, choosing ones that blend well and complement each other. Then blow off any excess dust.
- Use your finger to smudge the chalk outwards, away from the template.
- Repeat around the rest of the templates. Be sure to clean your hands between colours.
Step 4: Remove the templates
- Remove the templates from the paper, carefully peeling them away.
- Optional: Use a q-tip to brush away any chalk dust that’s inside the silhouettes.
- Your Halloween chalk art silhouettes are complete!
Helpful Tips:
- Keep hands clean between colours: Have damp paper towels ready to wipe off your fingers. Clean hands help keep your colours bold instead of blending together unintentionally.
- Try Q-tips or cotton rounds for blending: If you’d rather not get your hands dirty, use a Q-tip or cotton pad to smudge the chalk. Just be gentle — these tools lift more pigment, so a light touch works best.

What kind of chalk should I use to make Halloween chalk art silhouettes?
While regular chalk — like blackboard chalk or sidewalk chalk — can work for this craft, it doesn’t give you the same vibrant results. The colours are faint and are harder to blend smoothly. If you’re looking for that bright, glowing effect behind your silhouettes, soft pastels (also known as chalk pastels) are the way to go.
Soft pastels are artist-grade colouring sticks made with finely ground pigment and a small amount of binder. They’re not technically chalk, but they have a dry, powdery texture that feels similar and blends beautifully. These pastels lay down rich, bold colour with minimal pressure, making them ideal for kids and beginners.
You can usually find them at craft stores, art supply shops, or online. Look for sets that say “soft pastels” on the package — not oil pastels, which are waxier and don’t smudge or layer the same way.

How do I stop the chalk from rubbing off after the craft is finished?
Chalk pastels are beautiful to work with, but they do tend to smudge easily. If you want to preserve your artwork and prevent the chalk from rubbing off, you can use a light mist of hairspray as a fixative. Hold the can about 12 inches away and spray in short bursts to lightly coat the surface. Don’t soak the paper or it may wrinkle.
If you prefer something more professional, you can also buy a spray fixative made specifically for chalk pastels or charcoal at any art supply store. It sets the chalk without changing the colours as much as hairspray sometimes can. Either option is great if you plan to hang the art on a wall, display it long-term, or store it in a keepsake box.
If you’re just enjoying the craft for the afternoon and don’t mind a little chalk dust, feel free to skip this step!

Whether you’re crafting with a classroom full of kids or just looking for a fun afternoon activity at home, these Halloween chalk art silhouettes are a spooky-sweet way to celebrate the season. With just a few simple supplies and a bit of colourful blending, you’ll have glowing Halloween art that’s as fun to make as it is to display!
