Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Colour a coffee filter
- Flatten a coffee filter on a baking sheet or other waterproof surface.
- Use a washable marker to colour patches of colour onto the coffee filter.
- Fill the rest of the coffee filter with another shade of the same colour, or a different colour that will blend nicely.
Step 3: Add water to the coffee filter
- Pick up water with an eye dropper/pipette.
- Use the eyedropper to add water to the coffee filter until it’s saturated. This will cause the colours to bleed into each other and mix.
- Allow the coffee filter to dry completely. This will take anywhere from 30 minutes to 5 hours, depending on how much water you’ve added.
Step 4: Draw a haunted house
- Use black marker to draw the outline of a haunted house. We drew all of our haunted houses on different shapes of hills.
- Add window and door details to the house, and then colour in the house and the hill.
- Your haunted house coffee filter craft is complete!
- Now have fun making this easy Halloween craft in all kinds of fun colours!
Helpful Tips:
- We discovered that a black Sharpie actually bled more than washable markers when drawing the haunted house on the coffee filter!
- Stick to analogous colours that blend well together. Opposite colours on the colour wheel can mix into muddy browns and greys.
- Try out different markers for the background! Some “black” pens and markers surprise you by bleeding into deep blues or purples when water is added.

What type of markers work best for dyeing these spooky silhouette coffee filters?
You need to use water-based, washable markers to make these Halloween silhouette coffee filters. Crayola, Mr. Sketch, or any standard kids markers will blend really well with water.

Can I use watercolour paint instead of markers for this Halloween art with coffee filters?
Absolutely! Light washes of watercolour paint also work well for this haunted house craft. Just be sure not to oversaturate the coffee filter, or your brush strokes might cause it to rip.
You can also drop liquid watercolours or watered down food colouring instead of using marker.

What can I do with the finished haunted house coffee filter art?
There are so many fun ways to show off your spooky creations! Tape them to a sunny window and they’ll glow like Halloween suncatchers, casting eerie colours through the room.
You can also glue them onto folded cardstock to make one-of-a-kind Halloween cards or party invitations for friends and family. For a more dramatic look, mount your haunted houses on black cardstock or construction paper and arrange them into a DIY gallery wall.
