Cut out the shapes. Depending on what size you choose you can fit between 1 and 3 templates per page.
Add loops of painter's tape to the back of one shape. You want it to be secure, so that you can draw around it without the paper lifting. This might mean creating thinner loops on things like spider legs or cat tails.
Place the template on a black piece of paper, smoothing it down so it sticks well. Repeat with the rest of the shapes. You can also cut out inside details, like the jack-o-lantern face, if you'd like.
Step 3: Add colour around the templates
Use soft pastel to colour from the edge of the template onto the black paper, pressing firmly and extending the colour out at least 1/4 inch.
Repeat with the rest of the shapes, using different colours. You can also use 2 or 3 colours on one template, choosing ones that blend well and complement each other. Then blow off any excess dust.
Use your finger to smudge the chalk outwards, away from the template.
Repeat around the rest of the templates. Be sure to clean your hands between colours.
Step 4: Remove the templates
Remove the templates from the paper, carefully peeling them away.
Optional: Use a q-tip to brush away any chalk dust that's inside the silhouettes.
