Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Apply a base colour
- Paint an empty, clean wine bottle any colour. This will be your main colour. We chose gold.Allow the paint to dry.
- Repeat, adding several coats of paint. Allow the paint to dry between coats.
Step 3: Add an accent colour
- Apply painter’s tape to the bottle to create a fun pattern or design. We made horizontal lines on this bottle.
- Paint around the taped areas with an accent colour (we chose black).
- Remove the tape. Then allow the paint to dry.
Step 4: Add some sparkle
- Apply Mod Podge over the areas painted in the accent colour.
- Use a q-tip to wipe any Mod Podge that got onto the base colour.
- Sprinkle glitter onto the Mod Podge that matches the paint colour underneath (black). Allow the Mod Podge to dry, then brush away any excess glitter.
Step 5: Create numbered skewers
- Print our free wine bottle centerpieces template. The link is in the materials list above. Cut out the numbers you’d like. They can represent the year, table numbers, etc.
- Trace the template onto glitter cardstock. Cut the numbers from the cardstock.
- Add a generous dot of hot glue to the flat end of a wooden skewer.
- Place the back of the number into the glue. Hold them together until the number stays in place on its own.
- Repeat with any other numbers you’d like.Make 1 wine bottle for each number.
- Place the numbered skewers into the wine bottles.
- Your wine bottle centerpieces are complete!
Helpful Tips:
- Be sure to clean your wine bottles thoroughly before crafting. Soak your bottle in warm water to easily peel the label. Then remove any sticky residue using rubbing alcohol or Goo Gone.
- Remove the tape from your wine bottle centerpieces very carefully before the paint dries. The dried paint underneath can rip if the tape is removed too quickly, or after the accent paint dries. It’s also important to use painter’s tape to help prevent the paint tearing. Test your tape in a small spot or corner first to see whether it will lift the paint underneath.
- Place a clean sheet of paper under your New Year’s centerpieces when pouring the glitter. Then when you’re finished, use the paper underneath as a funnel to get the excess glitter back into its container.

Is there a way to apply the Mod Podge more precisely to my New Year’s wine bottle decor?
You can add painter’s tape to the bottle again before applying the Mod Podge. This is especially helpful when you’re using intricate designs or lot of straight lines. Be very careful when removing the tape. Peel it off slowly so it doesn’t rip the dried paint underneath.
How can I make elegant wine bottle centerpieces without glitter?
If you want your wine bottle centerpieces to be glamourous, but not glittery, try adding glossy Mod Podge to the accent areas. Apply it the same way you would if you were adding glitter, but don’t add the glitter on top.
Let the Mod Podge dry and you’ll have a glossy design on your matte painted bottle.
How can I dress up my wine bottle decor even more?
Once the paint and glitter are completely dry, place your New Year’s centerpieces together on a mirror base or tray. Decorate your centerpiece even more by adding twinkling fairy lights, mini disco balls, flowers, and more!
Wine bottle decor is the perfect way to add some low-cost elegance to your New Year’s celebration!
