How to Make Green Slime

Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Combine the ingredients
- Pour 1/2 cup of clear glue into a bowl.
- Add 1-1/2 teaspoons of baking soda.
- Stir to mix the ingredients together.
- Add food colouring to achieve your desired colour. We used 4 drops of lime green.Stir well and add more food colouring, if needed.
- Activate the slime by adding 2-1/4 teaspoons of contact lens solution.
- Stir the mixture until you can’t anymore and it starts to pull away from the sides of the bowl. Press the mixture down to incorporate all the contact lens solution.
Step 3: Work the slime in your hands
- Pick up the slime out of the bowl and work it in your hands – stretching, kneading, and rolling. It’ll be sticky at first, but don’t panic! Continue working it and using the slime to clean itself off your hands. Continue until the slime no longer sticks to your hands. You can add a couple more drops of contact lens solution if it’s still a bit too sticky.
- Your green slime is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- Don’t add too much contact solution at once, since it can make your slime rubbery. Start with 2-1/4 teaspoons and add just a drop or two more at a time, if needed.
- Your food colouring may produce a different shade than ours, so add it slowly, drop by drop, and stir between each drop to check the intensity of the colour. If you don’t have lime green food colouring, start by adding regular green. If it looks too blue, add a drop of yellow to make it a brighter, yellow-green.
- Store your slime in an airtight container or reusable bag. It will last for about a week. If it starts to dry out, you can knead in a few drops of water to refresh it.
What kind of contact solution works best for making green slimes?
To make slime you need a contact lens solution that contains boric acid and sodium borate. These are the key ingredients that will activate your slime.
Renu Advanced Formula Contact Solution (called Renu Fresh Multipurpose Solution in Canada) is a great option for slime making! If you use something else you may need to adjust the amount of activator, since different brands can contain different ratios of boric acid.
Always start off with a smaller amount and continue adding contact solution, rather than accidentally over-activating your slime.
Can I use white glue instead of clear glue for this green slime tutorial?
We prefer using clear glue for this recipe, mostly because it allows for a bright green colour and a translucent look. Clear glue also makes really glossy and stretchy slime.
However, any PVA glue will definitely work for making slime. The texture and look won’t be the exact same, but white school glue is a very popular choice for slime making. We recommend Elmer’s White School Glue for an affordable and reliable option.

There are so many options for add-ins to your green slime recipe! Did you know you can scent slime using baking extracts, essential oils, or fragrance oils? It totally adds to the sensory experience!
Or you can add glitter in a variety of sizes and shapes to make your clear slime sparkle. Then lean into the green theme by mixing in slime charms like green fruits, frogs and turtles, glow-in-the-dark charms, or aliens.
For extra texture, try adding plastic beads, pearl beads, or foam beads.
