Watch the step-by-step video tutorial:
Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Attach the clasp to the cord
- Cut a 4 foot (48 inch) piece of invisible beading thread. Fold the thread in half and slide the spring ring clasp onto the folded end, pulling it down about 1-1/2 inches.Note: We’re using black thread in this tutorial so you can see how to make the bracelet. Otherwise you wouldn’t be able to see the thread in the photos.
- Begin to make a knot, bringing the folded part around the rest of the cord. Don’t tighten the knot yet.
- Open the folded end of the cord and insert the clasp into the loop.
- Pull the knot tight, assisting the knot so that it forms right beside the clasp.
- Tape the clasp to your working surface to make it easier to form the beaded flowers.
Step 3: Make a beaded flower
- Separate the 2 strands into left and right. Add one bead of colour A (blue) to the right strand. This colour of bead will form the outside of the flower.
- Insert the left cord into the opposite end of the bead, where the right cord is coming out. The bead should now be attached to both cord ends.
- Pull the cord ends to push the bead up towards the clasp. Once the bead gets closer to the clasp, pull the cords down and out to center the bead.Continue until the bead is snug against the clasp. This bead forms the top petal of the first flower.
- Add 2 beads of colour A onto the right strand.
- Add 2 colour A beads to the left strand.
- Bring the ends of the left and right cords together. Add 1 bead of colour B (orange, for us) onto both strands. This bead will be the center of the flower.
- Slide the orange bead up towards the clasp.
- Bring the end of the right strand up and thread it down through the top of the 2 blue beads on the right, going away from the clasp.
- Pull the strand down, creating a small loop. Then repeat on the left side, threading the left cord down through the 2 beads on the left side.
- Pull the left cord to tighten the loop a bit. Adjust the beads so that they’re even and the loops are roughly the same size.
- Push the cluster of beads up towards the clasp while pulling on both cords to tighten the beads below the clasp. You can see the flower starting to form!
- Add 1 bead of colour A (blue) the same way as you added the first bead.(String the bead onto the right strand and then insert the left strand from the opposite direction.)
- Pull the strands, adjusting the bead until it sits below the other beads in the center.Your first flower is complete!Note: The center (orange) bead will not lie flat with the “petals”. It will always be higher or lower. If some of the center beads are below the petals, you can push them up so all the flowers look the same.
Step 4: Repeat Step 3
- Repeat step 3, making beaded flowers until the bracelet is long enough to fit comfortably around your wrist. The exact amount of flowers needed will differ from person to person (read below the tutorial for more information).Keep in mind that the clasp will take up roughly 1/2 inch, depending on its size.
Step 5: Finish off the bracelet
- Tie the cord ends into a double or triple knot below the last flower.
- Add the jump ring part of the clasp onto one of the cord ends. Then fold the cord end over the jump ring and bring it back through.
- Tie both strands together into a knot, pulling the jump ring towards last flower.
- Make a final knot with the cord ends, this time tying a surgeon’s knot.To do this, make a regular knot, but before tightening it bring the cord through the loop one more time. Then tighten the knot like usual.
- Cut the excess cord as close to the knot as possible.
- Your flower bracelet is complete! Here’s what it looks like when you use invisible beading thread. Remember, we only used black thread in this tutorial so you could see how to make the flowers.
Helpful Tips:
- You can use the same flower pattern to make a necklace or anklet!
- Make a flower bracelet with all the same colours of flowers, or create a multi-coloured bracelet!
What type and size of beads are best for making a flower bracelet?
We really love the delicate look of these flower bracelets made with small glass seed beads. The beads we used are size 10/0 and measure a bit larger than 2mm. You can also use 8/0 seed beads, which are just over 3mm in size.
We recommend buying Czech or Japanese glass seed beads, as they’re the best quality beads with the most consistent sizing. But you can easily make this a kids craft by buying a glass bead set at the dollar store and using the smallest size.
How many beads do I need to make a flower bracelet?
This will depend both on the size of the beads and the size of your wrist. If you have the same size beads as us, you’ll need to make about 24 flowers for a bracelet that fits a 7 inch wrist comfortably.
Each flower requires 6 beads of the main colour (colour A) and 1 bead of the center colour (colour B). Therefore you’ll need at least 144 beads of colour A and 24 beads of colour B. Plan on having extras in case your beads are inconsistent in size, so you can choose the best ones.
What type of cord or string is best for making a flower bracelet?
You need to use cord that’s thin enough to go through your beads twice, so choose a string that’s 0.5mm or less. We recommend a 0.2mm invisible beading filament.
This type of nylon thread is easy to use, because it’s a bit more sturdy and doesn’t unravel at the end. It’s also very strong, which creates a long lasting bracelet. But regular sewing thread will also work. This is what we used in the tutorial above.
Or, use an elastic thread to make your bracelet! You can tie both cord ends together in a surgeon’s knot to make a stretchy bracelet. This will fit over your wrist without the need for a clasp.
These DIY bracelets with detailed and colourful flowers are so fun to make! Whether you’re a seasoned jewelry maker or a beading beginner looking for a fun activity, you’ll love making this charming daisy chain bracelet! The process is so relaxing and meditative, and once you’ve made 1 flower you can easily make the rest of the bracelet.
