Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Align your fabric
- Cut 2 pieces of cotton fabric to 5 x 5 inches. Stack one on top of the other with the “right” sides in the middle.
- Cut a 4 x 4 inch piece of fusible interfacing. Set it on top of the cotton with the bumpy side down.
- Flip the pile over so the interfacing is on the bottom. Iron the coaster fabric with medium heat. This will fuse the interfacing to the fabric.
- Line up the 2 cotton pieces and add a sewing pin through the center, keeping them together.
Step 3: Sew the edges
- Sew around the fabric at the edge of the interfacing. Leave a 1 to 2 inch gap unsewn on one side.
- Cut the corners from the coaster. This will help prevent bunching when you turn your coaster. Be careful not to cut the stitches!
Step 4: Turn the coaster right side out
- Use your fingers or a loop turner hook to turn the coaster right side out. If necessary, use a pencil or skewer to make sure the corners don’t bunch up.
- Iron the coaster to smooth out the fabric.
Step 5: Add decorative stitching
- Sew a border around the coaster, about 1/4 inch from the edge.
- Cut the excess thread and sew an “X” shaped design across the coaster (going corner to corner).
- Your fabric coaster is complete!
- Now have fun making a whole set of DIY coasters. We love the mix and match look of this set!
Helpful Tips:
- Choose the right interfacing: When selecting fusible interfacing for your fabric coasters, opt for “fleece” or “quilting” interfacing. Pellon 987F Fusible Fleece provides the right thickness for absorbing moisture. Avoid lightweight interfacing (often used for shirt collars), as it won’t absorb spills effectively.
- No sewing machine? No problem! If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can hand-stitch these quilted coasters using a backstitch. This durable hand-sewing technique is ideal for keeping fabric and interfacing securely in place.

What if I don’t have fusible interfacing for my fabric coasters?
If you don’t have interfacing you can substitute it with cotton batting or felt. This will add thickness to your cloth coaster and help it absorb moisture.
Since felt doesn’t adhere like fusible interfacing does, it’s best to sew your coaster together first and then insert the felt before closing the edges.

How can I cut perfect squares for fabric coasters?
Iron your fabric before cutting it to remove creases or folds. This will ensure a smooth, accurate cut.
For precise cutting, use a:
- Quilting ruler for accurate measurements and clean lines
- Rotary cutter (Olfa or Fiskars are good brands) for easy, straight cuts
- Self-healing cutting mat to protect your working surface

How do I wash my DIY cloth coasters?
These fabric coasters are machine washable, but for best results wash them in a laundry bag on delicate cycle.
And avoid using the dryer — hang or air dry flat to maintain shape.

These DIY fabric coasters are sew fun to make, and they’re an easy way to add a cozy, handmade touch to any space. Whether you keep them for yourself or gift them to someone special, they offer the perfect blend of style and function — making every sip a little more stylish!
So, grab your favourite fabrics, fire up your sewing machine (or hand-sew for a cozy touch!), and start stitching today. Your table — and your guests — will thank you!
