Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Cut the egg carton pieces
- Use a craft knife to cut out 2 “cone” sections of an egg carton. This is the piece separating the cups where the eggs sit.
- With scissors, cut off the “corners” of each cup, separating the “petals”.
- Then clean up the edges of each petal, trimming them down so they’re flat on the end.
- Here’s what your flower pieces should look like.
Step 3: Paint the flower
- Paint the inside and outside of both pieces whatever colour you’d like your flower to be. Allow to dry.
- Dot a generous amount of yellow paint on the bottom inside of one piece. This will be the flower’s center. Again, allow to dry.
Step 4: Put the flower together
- Pick up the flower piece without the yellow. This is the bottom part of the flower.Press the petals down and out to open the flower.
- Add a generous amount of hot glue to the center of this piece.
- Place the second flower section inside the first, setting it so the petals are in-between the other ones.
- Bend back the petals on this section too, so the whole flower is opened up.
Step 5: Add a stem
- For the flower’s stem we’ll be using a green paper straw.
- Use a craft knife (or scissors) to cut a cross into one end of the straw, going about 1/2 inch down.
- Bend the ends of the straw back. You should have 4 relatively even sections, one in each direction.
- Add a small dot of hot glue to each section.
- Attach the stem to the bottom of the flower. Hold it in place until the glue is dry and it stays on its own.
- Your egg carton flower is complete!

Helpful Tips:
- Use cardboard egg cartons: They’re a lot easier to cut and paint compared to foam ones!
- Not all egg cartons are the same: Your flowers may look a little bit different than ours, because egg cartons come in a lot of different varieties, where the cones are different sizes and shapes.

What paint is best for making egg carton flowers?
High-quality acrylic craft paint works best for egg carton flowers. We used multi-surface acrylic paint for these flowers, which gives a smooth, slightly shiny finish and really helps the colours pop.
It also provides better coverage than regular acrylic paint, so you’ll need fewer coats to get a bright, even look — which is especially helpful when painting over the natural grey of the carton.

How can I make a small egg carton flower?
Some egg cartons have smaller sections on the lid that are perfect for making delicate, smaller flowers — like the yellow ones with thin petals in our photos. You can look at our supply photo in the tutorial above to see what part we’re referring to.
If your egg carton doesn’t have those pieces, you can easily create a similar look by trimming down the taller center “cones”, or even use one of the egg cups. Just tidy up the edges and cut the sides into evenly spaced sections to form thin petals.

What can I use for the stems of my egg carton flowers?
There are lots of easy options for stems, depending on the look you want and what you have on hand:
- Green paper straws for a lightweight, ready-to-use option
- Green pipe cleaners for flexible stems (great for kids)
- Wooden skewers or thin dowels (paint them green or wrap with floral tape)
- Wire floral stems for a more realistic and sturdy finish

Egg carton flowers are such a fun and creative craft for kids, and a great way to turn everyday materials into something beautiful. They’re easy to make, full of colour, and give kids a chance to get hands-on with cutting, painting, and designing their own unique blooms.
These handmade flowers also make a lovely Mother’s Day gift or keepsake that kids can be proud of. Whether you bundle them into a bouquet or display a few in a vase, they’re a simple, thoughtful way to create something special from the heart.
