How to Make a Clay Bunny
Materials:
- Polymer clay (white, pink, and black)
Watch the step-by-step video tutorial:
Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Prepare the clay
- Cover your working surface. You can use a silicone mat or place a piece of parchment paper on a baking sheet. We also recommend wearing nitrile gloves to prevent fingerprints from showing on the clay.
- Condition balls of polymer clay by squishing them in your hands repeatedly until the clay is soft and easy to work with. You’ll need white, pastel pink, and a smaller piece of black clay. If you don’t have these specific colours, you can mix colours of clay together until you reach the shade you’re looking for.
Step 3: Shape the main parts of the bunny
- Use white clay to form a cylinder shape with rounded ends. This is the bunny’s body.
- Roll 2 small rounded ovals for the bunny’s feet and a smaller ball for the bunny’s tail.
- Form 2 ovals slightly larger than the feet. Flatten them on the parchment and use your fingers to form them into an ear shape. Press the modeling knife into the clay to form an indent in the ear.
- Press a small piece of pink clay into the indent. Use the modeling knife to smooth the clay, forming the inside of the ear. Repeat to make the second ear.
Step 4: Attach the pieces
- Attach the feet to one end of the body on the long side of the cylinder so they stick out a little. Use the needle tool to smooth the feet into the body so they stay attached.
- Add the ears to the top of the bunny’s head (opposite the feet) so they stick up a bit. Use the needle tool to blend them in.
- Add smaller bits of white clay in front of and behind the ears. Blend this into the bottoms of the ears and the bunny’s body to help stabilize them in place.
- Press the bunny’s tail into the back of the body near the top. Use the needle tool to blend the edges in.
Step 5: Add the details
- Make a tiny pink ball of clay for the bunny’s nose. Flatten it with your finger, then use the clay tools (or toothpicks) to help form the clay into a triangle shape.
- Press the nose onto the middle of the bunny’s face and reshape as needed.
- Form tiny dots of black clay for the bunny’s eyes. Use the modeling knife to press them into place above the nose.
Step 6: Bake the clay
- Place the bunny on the parchment lined tray and bake according to package directions. Our clay recommends 275F for 15 minutes per 1/4 inch thickness.
- Your clay bunny is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- You can remove small imperfections from baked polymer clay by dipping a Q-tip in rubbing alcohol and gently rubbing it across the surface of the clay.
- If you’re finding it difficult to work with your clay, it likely requires more conditioning. You’ll know you’ve conditioned your clay enough when it feels soft and easy to form into various shapes. If the clay is too soft, your room might be too warm. Place the clay in the refrigerator for 5 to 10 minutes before working with it.

Where can I find the clay tools needed for this polymer clay bunny?
Some packs of polymer clay include a few clay tools with them. If you’ve already got polymer clay but are missing the tools for your bunny, you can find an inexpensive set of clay tools on Amazon or at your local craft store.
Some of these tools can also be improvised with other household items. A toothpick can work in place of the needle tool, for example.

What type of clay should I use to make my cute clay bunny?
We made our clay bunny rabbit from polymer clay. There’s no specific brand that’s best for making this bunny out of clay. While Sculpey and FIMO are a couple of the most popular polymer clay brands, this project will work just as well using inexpensive modeling clay from your local craft store or Amazon.

You can also make this bunny from air dry clay and avoid the need to bake your project!

How can I decorate my bunny clay sculpture?
There are endless possibilities to make each clay bunny unique! Try crafting a collection of bunnies, each in a different colour of clay, or mix multiple colours together (without overmixing) to create swirly multicoloured bunnies.
Experiment with changing the sizes and positions of their feet and eyes, make one ear partially flopped over, or create both ears floppy for added character. You can also personalize your Easter friend by adding fun accessories like a tiny carrot, Easter egg, or Easter basket before baking!
After baking, you can still add fun accessories to your clay bunny. Make a basket and eggs from craft foam or felt, add a ribbon bow tie, or use soft pastels or acrylic paint to add subtle shading to your bunny!
