Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Paint the penguin
- Hard boil an egg and wait for it to cool.Use a pencil to begin drawing a curved line on the egg, starting from the center, about 1/3 of the way down the egg.Draw the line going up and out, curving down like one side of a heart. Don't draw the line going in too far, though. Instead draw another curve that goes towards the back of the egg.
- Repeat and mirror the same line shape on the other side.
- Begin painting above the pencil lines with black acrylic paint.
- Keep the front part of the egg plain white and follow the curves of the lines on both sides.
- Continue, painting the entire back of the egg black. Then set the egg on something raised (we used an egg cup) and allow to dry.Add a second coat of paint, if necessary.
Step 3: Cut out the template pieces
- Print out our free penguin Easter eggs template (find the link in the materials list above).
- Cut out each of the pieces from the template.
- Hold the beak template on top of orange felt and cut it out.You can also pin the pattern to the felt to make it easier, or trace it with chalk or a gel pen.
- Place the feet template on orange felt as well, and cut it out.
- Finally, cut out both wing pieces from black felt.
Step 4: Decorate the penguin Easter egg
- Use a paint pen to draw on the penguin's eyes. You can draw the eyes on with pencil first if you'd like, and then draw over them with the marker.
- Add hot glue to the top and along the back side of the wing.
- Place the wing on, with the glue side towards the back of the penguin.Repeat, adding the second wing. (Make sure you add glue to the opposite side for this wing).
- Add a bit of glue to the middle of the beak shape and then fold it in half. Then add glue to the fold line and attach it to the penguin's face.
- Add a generous amount of glue to the back of the feet.
- Attach the feet to the bottom of the penguin egg so that the feet stick out in front of the penguin.
- Next, cut a little piece of cardboard to fit on the bottom of the feet piece. It should cover most of the feet without it sticking out from the sides.
- Glue the cardboard onto the bottom of the penguin's feet, towards the back. This will allow the penguin Easter egg to stand up on its own.
- Your penguin Easter egg is complete!
- Have fun personalizing your Easter egg penguins by adding other little details, like eyelashes and/or a bow.
Helpful Tips:
- If you’d like to cut out your own penguin feet instead of using the template, heart shapes make the perfect little penguin feet.
- If you don’t have a paint pen you can also use a black Sharpie marker to draw on the penguin’s eyes. Or if you feel comfortable with your painting skills, you can use a fine tipped paintbrush and acrylic paint to add on the eyes.

Can I eat these penguin Easter eggs?
No, we don’t recommend eating the hardboiled eggs afterwards, because of the acrylic paint and the glue. Even though a lot of acrylic paint is non-toxic, it’s not recommended to eat the eggs, since eggshells are permeable (they allow liquid through).
Do I have to use real eggs to make penguin Easter eggs?
Feel free to make these adorable penguins using a fake wooden egg, an egg made from paper, or a styrofoam egg. This will allow you to keep the eggs long term without worrying about them spoiling.
Can I make Easter egg penguins without felt?
Yes, if you don’t have felt you can also use cardstock, coloured paper, construction paper, or craft foam to add the details onto your penguin Easter egg.
What other accessories can I add to my penguin Easter egg craft?
We made a “girl penguin” by adding eyelashes and a small ribbon bow. You can also make a small paper or felt crown for an “emperor penguin”. Or give your penguin Easter egg a smart looking top hat (check out our melting snowman post for instructions on how to make a hat from felt).
