This pom pom pig is oink-redibly cute and so much fun to make! How to Make a Pom Pom Pig
Materials:
- Yarn (pink)
- Felt (pink)
- Puffy fabric paint (black)
- Round black beads (6mm)
- Pipe cleaner (pink)
- Tacky glue

Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Make the head and body
- Hold both sides of a 2-1/8 inch (5-1/2 cm) pom pom maker together and wrap one side completely with pink yarn.
- Cut off the yarn and use a latch hook tool (or scissor tips) to tuck the yarn end in, securing it in place.
- Fill the other side with pink yarn and latch the pom pom maker.
- Slide scissors into the gap between the two sides of the pom pom maker and cut through the middle of the yarn.
- Cut a piece of pink yarn about 18 inches long and insert it into the center of the maker (where you just cut).Wrap it around the maker and secure it with a double knot.
- Unlatch the pom pom maker and remove the pom pom. Then repeat making a second pink pom pom the same size.These pom poms will be the body and head of the pig.
Step 3: Make the legs
- Cut an 8 inch piece of pink yarn and insert it into the center space between the middle 2 tines of a fork.
- Wrap pink yarn across and around the middle of the tines 20 times. Try to concentrate the wraps in a 1 inch area.
- Cut the yarn and hold it in place while you pull the piece of yarn from between the tines up and around the bundle of yarn on the fork.Tie a single knot and pull tight. Slide the bundle off the fork, pull the single knot tight again, and add a double knot.
- Cut between the loops to create a small oval pom pom.
- Repeat, making 3 more oval pom poms, for a total of 4. These will be the pig’s legs!
Step 4: Create the ears, snout, and tail
- Begin by cutting 2 pieces of pink felt, each about 1-1/2 inches square. On each piece, round off 2 of the corners opposite each other, creating football-like shapes.
- Add a dot of tacky glue just above 1 point on each ear. Then pinch the edges together, creating a curved ear.
- You can hold the ears together until the glue dries enough to stay in place on its own, or use a clothespin or bag clip to hold them together while the glue dries.
- Cut a 1 inch square of pink felt and trim it into a rounded triangle shape. This is the pig’s snout. Add 2 small dots of black puffy paint for nostrils.
- For the pig’s tail, cut a piece of pink pipe cleaner around 1-1/2 to 2 inches long. Bend it to make a loop in the middle.
Step 5: Assemble the pig
- Stick the latch hook tool through the middle of the body pom pom. Then grab the long strings with the latch hook tool.
- Pull the strings through so they come out the side of the pom pom.
- Then use the strings to tie the head and body pom poms together with a double knot. Trim the excess yarn close to the knot.
- Find the middle strand of yarn holding the body pom pom together. Insert a latch hook tool (or other suitable tool) into the pom pom so it comes out on the opposite side of the middle strand.Wrap the long strands of one of the feet pom poms around the latch hook tool and pull them through to the other side of the body pom pom.
- Attach a second leg pom pom by tying it to the strings of the attached pom pom. Arrange the legs where you want them to be, pull the strings tight, and secure with a double knot.
- Repeat to add the last 2 small pom poms as legs.
Step 6: Trim the pom pom pig
- Cut off the long strands and give the body and leg pom poms a “haircut” until you’re happy with the shape.
- Then trim the head pom pom, making sure to leave longer strands where the snout will be.
Step 7: Add the details
- Cut the point off the glued ends of both ears.
- To attach the ears, make a little “trench” at the top side of the head. Add a dot of tacky glue and place the glued end of the ear in the trench. Repeat to add the second ear on the other side.
- Glue 2 black beads as eyes above the longer strands of yarn. Then add glue to the back of the felt snout and attach it below the eyes.
- Finally, add a dot of glue to the backside of the pig and press one end of the pipe cleaner tail into it. Press the yarn together around it to keep it in place.
- Your pom pom pig is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- You can glue the pom poms together instead of tying them. This allows you to place each pom pom exactly where you want it, but it’s less durable than tying them in place.
- Fluff out the yarn after trimming to bring back the pig’s fuzzy texture and hide any uneven cuts.
What kind of yarn is best for making pom poms?
Soft acrylic yarn works best for fluffy, easy-to-shape pom pom pigs. Thicker yarns (like chunky yarn) make fuller pom poms faster, while thinner yarns allow for more precise detail when trimming. Try to avoid stringy yarns, like cotton, as they won’t fluff up to provide shape to your pig.

Pom pom makers come in a variety of sizes and styles and can be found online, at craft stores, some big box department stores, and even some dollar stores! Having a set with multiple options is really helpful.
