These clay chicks are so adorable and super simple to make! This springtime clay project is perfect for beginners and is a fun activity for both kids and adults.
Place parchment paper on a baking sheet. We also recommend wearing nitrile gloves to avoid making fingerprints on the clay.
Condition the polymer clay by squishing it in your hands until it's soft and easy to work with. You'll need pastel yellow, pastel orange, and a small piece of black clay. If you don't have these specific colours, you can mix colours of clay together until you reach the shade you're looking for.
Step 3: Create the pieces of the chick
To make the chick's body, roll an oval shape using yellow clay. This chick is about 3/4 inches tall and 5/8 inches around, but you can make it whatever size you'd like.As you make the rest of the pieces for the chick, compare them to the body and re-size as needed to fit the size of your own chick.
Break off small pieces of yellow clay and make 2 small cylinders for the wings. Then roll 2 tiny "snakes," one longer than the other. These will be the crest for the top of the chick's head.
Form 2 small identical balls of orange clay to be the feet. Flatten them slightly. Make a really tiny ball of orange to be the beak.
Step 4: Put the chick together
Press the feet onto the bottom of the body. Use the needle tool (or a toothpick) to make indents on the toes.
Use the same tool to shape the edges of the feet, blending them into the body a bit so they'll stay in place.
Attach the wings to the sides of the chick, making sure the bottom sticks out from the side a bit.Use the pointed tool to blend the top of the wing into the body.
Press the beak into the center of the chick. Use the pointed tool to blend the edges into the face and then press the beak between your fingers to make it pointed.
Use the pointed tool to make little indents above the beak for the chick's eyes.
Roll tiny balls of black clay between your fingertips and press them flat into the eye indents.
Press the remaining yellow pieces onto the top center of the head so they stick out. Use the pointed tool to blend the bottom edge into the chick's head.
Step 5: Bake they clay
Place the clay chick on the parchment-lined tray and bake according to package directions. Our clay recommends 275F for 15 minutes per 1/4 inch thickness.
