Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Prepare the straw pieces and twine
- Cut 3 paper straws in half. You’ll have 6 equal parts.
- Remove 1 straw piece so you’re left with 5 in total.
- Cut a piece of string or twine long enough to fit the 5 straw pieces, plus about 5 to 6 inches extra. (Ours was 30 inches in total).
Step 3: Tie the paper straws on the twine
- String the straw pieces onto the twine. Leave an equal amount of extra twine on each side.
- Arrange the straws into a pentagon shape. Tie the two ends of the twine together in a double knot next to the straw ends.Tie it tight enough to hold its shape, but not so tight you can’t move the straws around.
Step 4: Fold a star shape
- Bring the bottom straw over to the left. Pull the left side under to the right at the same time. You should have an upside-down triangle at the top and a kite shape at the bottom.
- Fold the bottom 2 straws up so the point is at the top.
- Push the point under the top straight edge.
- Adjust the straws, sliding them around until the points are even.
- Tie the ends of the twine together in a knot to create an ornament hanger. Cut any excess twine above the knot.
- Your paper straw star is complete!
- Use a variety of festive colors or designs to make all different stars!
Helpful Tips:
- We used paper straws, but disposable plastic straws will also work for this craft. It’s a great way to use up those plastic straws so they don’t end up in a landfill!
- Change the size of your straw star ornament by cutting the straws into smaller or larger pieces. Make sure you change the twine length based on the length of your stars. Cut a longer piece of string for a larger ornament and a smaller length for a smaller one.
What if I don’t have any straws for my paper straw star ornaments?
No problem! Roll coloured paper into a straw shape, tape the edge so it stays together, and it will work just as well! A standard drinking straw is about 1/4 inch in diameter and 7-3/4 inches long, but your rolled paper can be longer or shorter for this craft. It’ll just change the size of your finished star!
What kind of string works best for straw star ornaments?
Any kind of string can be used for this craft. We tried thin ribbon, metallic string, and embroidery thread.
All of these options worked well, but we decided we liked the twine look the best. Choose whichever type of string you like!
It’s difficult to fold my paper straw star ornament. How can I make it easier?
When tying the string after adding the straw pieces, it’s important not to tie it too tight. To check whether it’s too tight before knotting the string, tie the first half of your knot and make it the tightness you think is right.
Hold the knot in your fingers so it doesn’t slip and try to fold the bottom corner of the shape over to the opposite side. If you can do this, tie the rest of the knot.
If you can’t fold the shape over, it’s too tight. Adjust the knot and try again until you find the right level of tension.
Who knew paper straws could be the “star” of the show? Use your paper straw stars to create a starry mobile, dangle them from your curtain rods, or hang them in your holiday wreath! They’re a fast and effortless way to add a homemade touch to your holiday decor.
