Hello again! It’s Alicia from The Baker Upstairs, and I’m back with another delicious dessert recipe to share with you. This homemade peach crisp is the perfect summer dessert! It’s so easy to make, loaded with juicy peaches, and topped with a to-die-for buttery crisp topping.
Is this summer flying by for everyone else? My family has spent most of the summer so far in the process of buying our first home, and we are finally moving in this week! I’m so excited to finally have a place that is just ours, and we’ve spent the last few weeks since we got the keys making it our own. We’ve painted every room in the house, ripped out the bedroom carpet and refinished the floors, and bought a new patio dining set so we can eat outside. It has been so much fun, but it has also meant that we have missed out on some of our summer traditions. We haven’t been to a single splash pad or swimming pool so far this year, and we have seriously slacked on our summer bucket list.
As I mentioned a few weeks ago, one of our favorite things to do during the summer is to pick fresh fruit at a local farm. We picked strawberries last month, but so far we haven’t been back for more summer berries, which is a shame. I realized with a shock that peach season will be starting for us in the next few weeks, and I still have several jars of home-canned peaches from last year that I haven’t used up yet! We picked over 50 pounds of fresh peaches last year, and they were so perfectly sweet and ripe, and made the best canned peaches. I’ve been pretty miserly with them all through the winter, and haven’t wanted to let them go. Now that fresh peaches are on the horizon, though, it’s time to use them!
I used two bottles of home-canned peaches to make this fabulous homemade peach crisp, and it definitely did them justice! I love that this crisp allows the peaches to shine, and enhances their flavor with a sweet, crumbly, cinnamony topping. It’s one of my favorite desserts to make, and always a favorite with my whole family!
Homemade Peach Crisp
The full recipe is at the bottom of this post, but here’s what you’ll need:
- peaches (fresh or canned)
- brown sugar
One of the great things about this recipe for homemade peach crisp is that you can use whatever type of peaches you have on hand. Fresh, canned, or frozen – they all work great! I used my home-canned peaches from last year, but I’ve made this with fresh and frozen peaches before, and it has always come out well. If you’re using canned peaches that are already sweetened, you may want to reduce the sugar in the filling a little (or you can leave it there if you have an incurable sweet tooth like me).
The crisp is so simple and straightforward to make! You’ll start by tossing the filling ingredients together. I often mix them in the baking dish itself, so I don’t have to wash an extra dish. The crisp topping is super quick and easy to make, too. Grating the butter into the other ingredients is one of my favorite hacks. It makes it so easy to break it down into pea-sized pieces, and gives the crisp the perfect texture.
Once the crisp has baked, it’s a good idea to let it cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving, so the filling can set up a little. It’s definitely best when it’s still warm, though. We especially love it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Ice cream and peach crisp were just made for each other!
This is definitely one of my favorite summer desserts! I love that it’s so easy to make, but special enough to serve when I have dinner guests. It reheats nicely, too, so it’s easy to make earlier in the day, and then reheat when I’m ready to serve. It’s a comfort food dessert that’s sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face!
- 6 cups fresh or canned peaches, peeled and sliced
- ¼ cup sugar
- ¼ cup flour
- pinch of salt
- ⅔ cup old fashioned oats
- ⅔ cup flour
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1½ teaspoons cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 8 tablespoons butter, cold
- Preheat the oven to 350. In a medium bowl, toss together the peaches, sugar, flour, and pinch of salt. Spread the mixture in the bottom of a 9 x 9 baking dish.
- In another medium bowl, whisk together the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Grate in the butter, and smush the mixture with your fingers until the pieces of butter are no larger than pea sized. Sprinkle the topping over the fruit to form an even layer.
- Bake 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown on top and bubbling. Let cool 10-15 minutes before serving.
This sweet homemade peach crisp is bursting with juicy peaches, and topped with a delicious and crisp oatmeal crust for an unforgettable dessert!
