Homemade hot chocolate is the best! And it’s even better when you use chocolate chips instead of mixing powders together. This homemade hot cocoa is delicious, only has 3 ingredients and will definitely bring a smile to your face on a cold winter’s day.
There is nothing to it – I love it when delicious things are easy to make!
Homemade hot chocolate
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of whole milk
- 1/2 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
- 3 dashes of salt
Instructions:
- Combine ingredients in a small pot and heat on low. Whisk often.
- If you don’t want to see the bits of chocolate, cook it on low for 20 minutes, whisking occasionally until the chocolate completely dissolves.
- Be careful not to let it come to a boil.
- Serve with marshmallows, whipped cream or candy cane whipped cream.
I’m sure regular milk would work too, but with our little ones, we only keep homogenized milk in the fridge right now. If you want it creamy, you could also use 1 cup of 1% or 2% milk and 1 cup of half and half cream.
Pour in the chocolate chips and heat on low, whisking often:
Let it cook for about 20 minutes until the chocolate completely dissolves. If you don’t mind having bits of undissolved chocolate there is nothing wrong with cooking it less! It’s all up to you! The longer you cook it, the better the chocolate will dissolve.
You’ll have to adjust this recipe for your own tastes. I find that some recipes for how to make hot cocoa have way too much sugar for my liking. It’s not an exact science – If you find it too chocolatey, add more milk while it’s still heating. If you don’t find it sweet enough, add some extra sugar and a small amount of vanilla extract until it tastes good.
It’s sweet and smooth and oh so comforting on a cold and windy winter day. And you have to love how easy it is to make! You can never go wrong with 3 ingredient recipes! (Well, okay, you probably can, but I promise, this is not one of those times).
This is such a treat. It’s almost like drinking pure melted chocolate. Have you ever seen the movie Chocolat? I watched it again a few weeks ago and I have been craving chocolate ever since. This is what I imagine the hot chocolate in the movie would taste like.
This is an easy recipe for homemade hot chocolate that only has 3 ingredients that you probably already have at home. There is next to no effort required to mix everything together, you just combine the chocolate and the milk and heat it through. Next time you shovel the driveway or make a snowman with your kids, make a cup of this when you get back inside to warm yourself up. You won’t regret it!

Those packets of “hot chocolate mix” that I grew up on are rather scary! This looks lovely…
Have you ever made homemade marshmallows? They are divine! Not that hard to make either…
We use raw cacao powder in our hot cocoa…it’s $, but worth a try…
We featured you today at Our Sunday Best. This will also be pinned!
My best,
Nicolette
Thanks again Nicolette! I haven’t made homemade marshmallows, but it’s on my to do list. I only found out a month or two ago that it was even possible to make homemade marshmallows!! Raw cacao powder sounds delicious. I’ll have to see if it’s available at any of the stores around here!
Great recipe! Thanks for linking up to real Food Friday 🙂
We’ve recently started making hot chocolate this way, and it is SO MUCH TASTIER! Mexican hot chocolate is also similar, and we like it a lot too. 🙂
Oh yea, now that is hot chocolate. An egg yolk would make it the perfect morning meal. Thanks for sharing at Real Food Fridays!

A raw egg yoke? Or does it cook in the heat? Now THAT is something I never would have considered! Have you tried that before??
Oh, looks so yummy and perfect for the freezing winter days:)
