Hello again! It’s Alicia from The Baker Upstairs, and I have another tasty dessert to share with you today. These chocolate snickerdoodles are cookie perfection – they’re soft in the middle, crisp around the edges, and so fudgy and sweet. They’re the perfect treat to make when those chocolate cravings hit, and they are super easy to make, too!
My mom has never been much of a baker, and I don’t remember her making a lot of desserts when I was a kid. She was very into healthy food, so we generally had fruit (or nothing) for dessert most nights. It’s pretty funny to think about that in contrast with my adult life as a dessert blogger, surrounded by cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and more! While I do bake nearly every day, I end up giving away most of the treats I make. My kids are so used to having cookies and other treats around that they are completely unimpressed by them. One thing my mom did bake fairly regularly, though, were snickerdoodle cookies. They were my absolute favorites when I was a little girl!
The smell of my mom’s snickerdoodles baking was enough to draw all of us kids out from wherever we were playing, and we would come beg for a hot cookie, fresh out of the oven. I loved the crisp cinnamon sugar outside, the soft and pillowy inside, and the sweet flavor. To this day, they are still one of my favorite cookies, and I love making them for my own kids now! I started out making them with my mom’s classic recipe, but I’ve made a few tweaks over the years to suit my family’s preferences. We’ve experimented with some different and fun variations, like pumpkin snickerdoodles, but I think these chocolate snickerdoodles are my new favorite!
Adding chocolate to anything is pretty much always a good idea, and it’s a fantastic idea with these chocolate snickerdoodles! The cocoa powder adds so much flavor, and makes the cookies rich and fudgy. If you love chocolate like I do, these cookies are for you!
The full recipe is at the bottom of this post, but here’s what you’ll need:
- brown sugar
- cocoa powder
- baking soda
- cream of tartar
- cinnamon sugar
The dough mixes up so thick and chocolatey! I used a stand mixer, but you could easily make them with a hand mixer instead.
Scoop the dough into one inch balls, then roll them in cinnamon sugar. The combination of flavors with the chocolate and cinnamon is amazing! Be sure to leave enough space between the cookies on the baking sheet to allow for spreading.
While they bake, they will puff up, then start to flatten out and crack on the top. They’ll look a little undercooked when you pull them out, but they’ll firm up as they cool on the cookie sheet.
These cookies are my favorite when they’re still slightly warm from the oven, with a glass of milk. They’re so soft and tender, with a rich chocolate flavor.

I think these cookies are best on the day they’re made, but leftover cookies have never been a problem at our house. 🙂 These are definitely some of our favorite cookies!
- In a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, beat together the butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla and beat until smooth.
- Add the cocoa powder, flour, salt, baking soda, and cream of tartar, and mix until combined. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Toward the end of the chilling time, preheat the oven to 300.
- Line two baking sheets with parchment or silicone liners. Roll the dough into 1 inch balls, then roll each ball in the cinnamon sugar. Place one inch apart on the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake 12-13 minutes, or until the tops are cracked and the bottoms are just slightly browned. Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes before removing to a cooling rack. Enjoy!
